Hold on regardless of whatever !
Blog 1
Hello. My name is Dr. Jinu Mathew and this is the first time I am reaching out to you through this blog. World over, we are in a lockdown, enforced and not of our volition, yet one of our own choosing ! There is anxiety, concern, and fear in the air. The oft asked question is how do we maintain our sanity in these uncertain times ? We have families stuck together with fathers, mothers, grandparents and children all caged indoors and forced to stare at each other’s faces inexorably. When was the last time you realized that your daughter had a taste for painting or that your wife could cook excellent dishes just by ‘you-tubing’ or you could actually chase that distant dream of doing an online course to develop a new skill ? While shutting the usual rigmarole routine from our lives, the current crisis has opened up new frontiers and doors in our own lives, and helped us see a new side to us, that was plausibly sleeping. For some it has made them explore capabilities which they never knew existed, in the first place, be it baking, salsa, writing etc. This lockdown has been a time of discovery & creative pursuits for many, especially for families with children. The icing on the cake would be when it helps some of us tick off items, that were earlier destined to be consigned to ‘bucket lists’, reserved for ever.
I have been kept busy. I am a weekend writer. However, weekdays have been replete with work, keeping me truly busy. Leading people and giving them a sense of purpose during these difficult times and exhorting them to see their true worth and helping them stay relevant has been the biggest lockdown challenge for me and my top priority now. Given the negativity, gloom and despair all around , it is very easy for the human mind to slip into depression and wallow in ‘self pity’ with a feeling of nonchalant silent resignation to the situation. Staying calm and holding on regardless of whatever, with fortitude is the need of the hour. So if you are an organization or someone who manages people, be it your family, your co-workers or colleagues at work place, it is important that you hold the fort and also encourage people around you to ‘stay put’ and be strong. For just as all good things come with an expiry date, all bad things also don’t last forever.
These times have brought out the best and also the worst in us. There are stories emerging of brave doctors and nurses going the extra mile and working round the clock to take care of the COVID19 affected, without personal protective gear, not because they care two hoots about personal safety, but because of the paucity of supply of the gear. We have also read and seen appalling visuals of fights in supermarkets over things as basic as toilet rolls, not because there wasn’t enough for one man or woman but not enough for their greed ! Yes , what emerged were grisly fist fights to hoard it, lest the markets ran out of it and god forbid they had to poop and nothing to wipe clean their butts with, in the absence of toilet paper !

Frontline workers like doctors, nurses, medical staff, paramedics, the police & delivery personnel aside, there is another category of unsung heroes that no one is talking about – the children of the world. There are infants, toddlers & school going children who have been confined indoors without movement for days & weeks together. The biggest challenge before parents and elders managing these kids in these times has been, how to figure out innovative ways & means to keep them occupied and this has been no mean task. Over the last few weeks, we have seen and read reports of board games and card games making a comeback to family dinner tables and stories of families co-creating indoor games with weird stuff like wad rolls of toilet paper. Children across the world across all age groups, have silently fallen into order and are cooperating to the ‘T’ during the lockdown. One may find that rabble rouser ‘lockdown violator’ on the streets in several places across the globe, but not one stray child , has stepped out to swing that cricket or baseball bat or dribble that basket ball across the court, for a change. It seems they have all been drummed to submission and obedience or simply, they have all decided to fall in line, in unison across the globe, in tacit support of the lockdown. Kudos are equally due to parents, grandparents and the caretakers of all kids worldwide for their resilience and fortitude, in these testing times. Whenever we emerge out of this crisis, in the coming times, we would have spawned an entire generation that will have developed a new threshold to bear pain and suffering. We are going to see a new era of people who would have developed a ‘herd immunity’ against uncertainty and emerge victorious, no matter what the odds. This possibility is a blessing in disguise due to the COVID-19 crisis. Having said that, the onerous task at hand is to fight this scourge of COVID-19.
This too shall pass and we will wake up to a new dawn & a different world where everyone is back with renewed vigour and chasing their dreams. To see that tomorrow, we need to be alive & kicking. We must all practise the essentials of lockdown handed down to us by our local authorities, state & federal governments /administration. This is the time to unflinchingly follow the pains of lockdown for a wonderful tomorrow. As I sign off, I wish you all good health & happiness. Stay safe, spare a thought for those in the frontline of the battle against COVID-19, help the homeless, poor and the daily wage workers, in whatever capacity you can and regardless of whatever, remember, ‘HOLD ON! “.

Amidst the race against time to thwart the spread of Corona virus and all the chaos and uncertainty in the current times, the only living things that seem happy are the green plants , trees in full blossom, the birds that make a dwelling therein and the free wheeling animals, that cannot but unmistakably wonder how mother nature has suddenly bestowed upon them clean air and water, bereft of pollution, sans human interference.

Timeless calcutta - an unforgettable short story
Calcutta or ‘Kolkata’ as it is now known ( thanks to the Anglican name purging movement by misguided political zealots to stoke a sense of false Bengali pride, as was the case elsewhere with some other cities in India) was the unlikeliest of places that I thought I would ever step my foot on, let alone live…

COVID-19 Preparedness is the key.

Societies worldwide have been pressed into lockdown for weeks now. As governments plan their exit strategy to emerge out of the lockdown, the key question that will now need to be addressed is how and what form the lockdown exit should take. While undoubtedly, one cannot be confined indoors for ever, one also needs to be absolutely certain that any opening up of the society will not exacerbate the existing pandemic situation and unleash a monster that would be difficult to rein in. There is not an iota of doubt across geographies that the scale and the count of tests being carried out to pick positive COVID cases, has tremendous scope for improvement and probably not enough. What is scary, is to imagine a situation when asymptomatic people, hidden indoors today, completely oblivious to their ‘carrier’ state and the danger they possess to healthy individuals, coming outdoors unsuspectingly, post lockdown and unintentionally spreading the virus. Do we have an answer to the problem ? No !. So should we continue to stay locked down, until a vaccine is developed ? The obvious answer is again an emphatic ‘No’.
We will never know what form & shape a post lockdown scenario will take for societies across the globe, be it in UK, US, Europe, Japan, Australia, India or elsewhere. It is also important at this juncture for organizations across industries to decide if they wish to stay put on their tracks, defiant against this health storm that we are facing or adjust their sails according to the wind, and sail out to a new horizon, by re-inventing their product suite and service delivery. If one is into manufacturing, it is time to think about re-prioritizing few products over others and /or come up with new product classes with a novel distribution supply chain and logistics. If one is into services, be it IT & ITES, Health care, Education, Banking & Financial services, devising a strategy to take the brand home with tailor made products , which are primarily in the category of essential services or akin to essential services in the second tier like internet services, education, news and information, transaction banking etc, to the door step of the novel Post Corona consumer could be the new re-think. If that means, concentrating on a certain class of products for certain organizations or an altogether new basket of offering, so be it. The difference between companies & organizations that not only survive and emerge stronger out of this pandemic and stay relevant in the emerging times would be the speed with which they re-invent themselves and the agility that they show to swiftly transform their businesses by fine tuning policies and if required, dump old ones all together and embrace a new way to do business in the coming times. This would be of paramount importance if businesses need to stay relevant to the end consumer, whether it be conventional brick & mortar establishments or e-commerce companies. We are living in times where car manufacturers have decided to dedicate a few of their assembly lines to manufacturing Personal Protective Equipment ( PPE) and FMCG companies that one would normally associate with soaps and shampoos, deciding to manufacture sanitizers in sachets, so that the poor or homeless who cannot afford a bottle of sanitizer can at least buy that 1 or 2 sachets and disinfect himself or herself, should the need arise.
Day in and out, newspapers are replete with stories of brave individuals and entrepreneurs coming forward with their limited resources to contribute in their own capacities, in unforeseen ways, to the war against Corona Virus. These are the organizations who are not only staying relevant in these times, by changing course to give it back to the community, but also piloting their blueprint to diversify and refresh their product line. It would do well for all of us to remember that Nokia didn’t start with phones nor did 3M with ‘Post-It’ Notes. Several other big names today like Berkshire Hathaway , Avon, DuPont etc all started with very different businesses, than what they are in today. So, what set them aside and how did they transform to the super successful behemoths that they have come to represent today ? They all saw opportunity in adversity and were prepared. What will determine your future as an individual or as an organization will be your attitude in these times of crisis. Will you like that ‘non-descript’ accounting firm, down the road decide to cut flab and throw employees out, citing poor business orders or instead back your employees to the hilt, pull up your socks and re-invent your product catalog or your service offering and decide to stay relevant to emerge stronger, mature, bigger and better, from the crisis ? Are you going to script a new story of success and become that new corporate super power ? If yes, you need to start now, for preparedness my friend, is the key !

Lockdown :Hire, Fire or Re-wire ?
Blog 3
Factories are slowly lifting their shutters worldwide, production has started, albeit at a fraction of their full capacity and at a measured pace. Offices worldwide are contemplating and planning an exit strategy to emerge out of the lockdown and get employees back to work from office. In the midst of all these strategizing, there are a set of organizations that are firing people, with the hope that it will save them expensive working capital and help stem the bleed that started because of downing shutters during the lockdown. The intent with which they seem to be doing this is to save the company from an impending crash. The argument in favor of such a ‘surgical downsizing’ is that it will help keep the company afloat, by reducing the controllable cost of manpower, when other non controllable ones like rentals etc cannot be contained.
However, some companies seem to be adopting a counter-intuitive approach, & doing exactly the opposite by doubling up on hiring, advertising, research & development. What is the rationale that these companies have, to justify their action, when worldwide sale of goods and services are on an ‘elective decline’, post the lockdown ? There must be a compelling reason for them to believe that this strategy of theirs will ‘pay off’. If so, what is the thought process behind such a strategy ? It has been observed that these companies are either in lines of businesses that are are most sought after during the current health crisis and would continue to remain so, in the near future. The nature of business of some of these companies are health care, pharmaceuticals, home entertainment, manufacturing of hospital supplies, which incidentally is in short supply world wide and e-commerce , e-tailing in particular, especially since the average consumer out there would rather now prefer to order things online, if given a choice, instead of stepping out of the comfort of their homes, for the fear of contracting an infection. A few others are cashing in on the primal human fear of sickness and death. These are the insurance companies, who have been the fastest to ‘cut to the chase’ during the lockdown and get aggressive with the sale of insurance policies of all kind, be it health, life or general insurance. Even though they have been forced to be out of action for these many weeks, life has not been all dismal for these companies and their employees, with a sudden rush to re-instate lapsed policies by paying up forgotten or once ignored insurance premium and a general propensity by the masses to be receptive to all things insured ! Why shouldn’t they then double up on advertising & hiring, so that when the lockdown is over they can ‘rake in the moolah’ ?
What should most other companies do, who don’t seem to be in a position to ‘cash in’ on the crisis & are in businesses that are contrastingly different from the category of what constitutes an ‘essential service’ ? Should they take a prudent approach and lay off a few employees ? Should they follow a strategy of letting go employees in whom they are least invested, those who are new to the organization and still learning the ropes of the trade and yet to contribute significantly to the organization, especially the newbies – a ‘Last-In-First-Out’ ( LIFO) approach ? While a LIFO approach may seemingly soften the blow that they are facing in their businesses, because of the economic slump brought about by the pandemic, it will not help their overall cause. Why ? Remember these are employees who have been on-boarded to do a particular job and if you are hiving them off, their share of job will need to be done by another retained employee. While business sentiment may be down now and the job burden can easily be shouldered by the retained employee, the tide will eventually turn and when normalcy returns, you will have overburdened, disgruntled employees doubling up work, which was originally meant for twice their number. And talent doesn’t come easy nor cheap. While one may argue that when business picks up, one can always restore the original head count, it may not happen at the snap of a finger. Besides, true character and resilience of an organization emerges in times of crisis. By sacking employees during a crisis, you would have sent out a message that you have their back only , as long as the going is good. That will not only earn the company bad press & reputation, with potential new hires wary of the organization and also create a band of existing employees, who are also not as loyal to the brand as they ought to be. This will foster a culture, where employees will ‘abandon ship’ at the slightest hint of an adversity. Strong ‘all-weather’ brands and businesses are not built with an employee base like that. Therefore a ‘fire’ strategy is undoubtedly not a good one to shore up business; it is merely a short gap fix to reduce perceptible cash outflows, when inflows are only trickling in.
On the contrary, companies who reach out to employees with the reassurance that, no matter what, we are in this together and we will adjust our sails against the blowing wind and sail out into the horizon together, even if its at a slower speed. By doing so, they will have built not only a loyal following of employees with great stickiness to the brand, but also a workforce who will go all out to ensure that they win together as a company. And such companies would be able to pull it off successfully in the long run, because during the lockdown instead of overly worrying about eroding margins, they would have invested in re-orienting their businesses, by doing away with redundant procedures, policies and tweaked their product and service line to make it relevant to the current and emerging times, to cater to their client and potential customer needs better. They would have re-wired themselves & rebooted the organization with a completely new perspective before going out into the new market place. The moot question therefore, during these times of extended lockdown, before all C-level executives is whether to hire, fire or re-wire ? And the answer to that question will determine the future trajectory of the organization in the corporate world.

In the times of Corona:Do’s & Dont’s for Pet Parents.
Blog 4
The Corona virus lockdown has been leading people, worldwide into novel situations, circumstances and there is a new normal emerging. While we face this lockdown stoically, it is equally important to pay attention to the health and well being of our four legged creatures, who make home, with us as pets. That’s right. There is a serious need for all pet parents to attend to their pets, more than ever before. I am not saying this because of the fear that they can contract COVID 19 and pass it on to us ( they cannot, at least it has not been proven yet !) , but because they can negligently be pushed into the brink of several other illnesses, because of our oversight & callous diffidence during these times.
To their surprise & immeasurable delight, pets are suddenly seeing their human parents more at home ( in fact ‘all at home’) ,than before. I am assuming that, while during the early days of lockdown, this may have come across as sheer bliss to the four legged ones, with the passing of time and with lockdown upon lockdown being thrust on their human co-inhabitants, they must now be genuinely disappointed at the lack of ‘human-free, me-time‘.
Pet parents need to be mindful of several things to ensure that their pets stay in the ‘pink of their health’. So, here’s the list of action items:
- Pet-safe work zone : As pets hover around you, while you are ‘working from home’, it is important that they are not near any office laptop or phone. The last thing you want is to worry about figuring out, how to fix a broken laptop screen in a remote work environment or about running to the vet with a pet that ‘accidentally’ chewed on that laptop charger cable, out of boredom, while you were unmindfully yapping away during a Webex, Zoom, Skype or Google Hangout Video call. Such a pet can suffer from gastric obstruction & intestinal tear and bleeding due to foreign body retention, leading to bloody diarrhoea & vomition. Therefore it is important to create a safe zone at home to work out of, ensuring your pet is not in proximity to cables, power sockets or laptop screens.
- Do not overfeed your pet : Just because you are at home and around your pet all the time, it doesn’t mean that you need to eat more or feed your pet more ! Every time the cuties wag their tail and look at you with their cherubic innocent faces, please do not be tempted to feed them. Instead pet them, play with them and show them affection, but stick to their original meal plans. The last thing you want is an obese dog or cat, who just fattened up, courtesy an over doting pet parent, who went a little easy on treats and kibble. Obesity can pre-dispose the pet to several metabolic disorders like renal failure, fatty liver, diabetes mellitus, cardiac ailments etc. Love them all you can, but minus the untimely treat. This is not the time for you to fall for that puppy love !
- Maintain adequate physical activity : The lockdown imposes severe restrictions on many things & fewer relaxed ones on some others. Please take your dog out for that mandatory walk so that he gets his daily dose of sunshine and exercise. It is absolutely important for young ones and growing pets, so that they stay alert, sharp, agile & fit. Vit D from sunlight is needed for calcium absorption and uptake for a healthy skeletal system.Exercise will also help them mobilize all their muscles and improve blood circulation to all important vital organs, maintaining optimum health. Under no circumstance, must you keep the pet confined within four doors as it can result in the pet developing an altered state of mental health, with some pets becoming slow, dull and depressed. Instead, take them out for emptying their bowels and marking their territory, maintaining social distancing from other pets and their pet parents.
- Regulate Noise levels within the house : With the entire family cooped up at home, there is a very strong likelihood of family time being raucous & laced with loud conversations and laughter, surrounded by movies, songs & sporting activity on television and other media, being played out loud and in excess- an organic entertainment development to make up for the restraint on the family from stepping outside. While it may be prudent to keep a self-check on such behavior, it is recommended to keep pets in your balconies or in another room, while indulging in high decibel activity.
- Postpone elective surgeries and non critical clinical intervention : Everything that was planned with an elective date, be it that castration operation to render your aggressive dog docile or that spaying operation that was being planned for the female dog, since you have no plans of rearing puppies, must be deferred or postponed for a latter date, post the lockdown. Other clinical intervention like dental scaling, professional ear cleaning by the vet etc can also wait. This is when you show your love to your family vet by not endangering his life, more than needed, by ensuring you go out to him, only when it’s absolutely necessary and practise social distancing.
- Follow your annual vaccination and deworming schedule : Lastly, if there is a scheduled vaccination or de-worming date that you need to abide by, as instructed by your vet, you must adhere to it and never postpone or defer it. Dogs are vaccinated every year against several infectious diseases like Canine Distemper, Canine Hepatitis, Parvoviral Infections, Panleucopenia virus and multiple strains of Leptospira. These are collectively bundled in one vaccine, popular with vets as DHPPiL vaccine, given once every year. Apart from this, there are three other vaccines that must be given annually to protect your dog : Canine Rabies, Canine Corona Virus and the Kennel Cough vaccine. Likewise there is a set of vaccines for your cat too that follow an annual regimen. Since these need to be given every year ,your vet will have advised you the correct dates for the annual shots, and these would have been recorded in your pet’s vaccination booklet, meticulously by him. Failure to give the vaccine on the scheduled date can have an adverse health impact in the form of lowered immunity to these infections in your pet. The due dates for the vaccination correspond to the time of falling antibody titres against these pathogens, which were built basis the shots given in the preceding year. Therefore , it is imperative that these dates are adhered to and never missed. Don’t forget that some of these infections like Parvoviral infections, Leptospirosis, Distemper etc have a high mortality rate, while some others like rabies are always fatal and zoonotic in nature, that can endanger the lives of other animals & humans alike. You must also ensure that your pet is dewormed timely so that your pet stays healthy and free from parasitic infections like tapeworms, roundworms and hookworms.
The lockdown may not get over in a hurry. Even if it does, we will still continue to operate from a home environment for weeks, if not months to come. It is important that we ensure that all our family members, including our pets stay home, healthy and safe.

COVID 19 Work Conundrum : Work from Home or Office
Blog 5
After the COVID 19 lockdown lifts, to work from home or office is going to be the most hotly debated subject in corporate circles. There is a paradigm shift in the way companies are thinking now, evaluating employee productivity levels in a home-office setting, with a different yardstick. The intent of doing so is to prepare and be ready for a whole new world that is bracing to be more contact-less and yet carry on with it’s daily grind, delivering the desired output levels. Even though the end of lockdown will signal a reluctant return to the office environment for many, it may take considerable time before ‘status quo‘ will be restored. In fact, some companies have already announced that they will not be returning to their offices in 2020 or even Q1 of 2021.
Organizations which are people driven and highly labour intensive like factories and manufacturing industries will be the first ones to strive to get their employees back on the floor. However, post the end of the lockdown, there will be a scenario where employees are sceptical to get back to an office, which was never designed in the first place, with social distancing norms, in mind or levels of sanitation, required in the event of a pandemic outbreak. Employees with elderly parents, young children and family members with existing metabolic illnesses like heart and kidney ailments, high blood pressure, diabetes etc, at home, will be extremely wary & in no tearing hurry to get back to work from office. The last thing they would want would be to contract an infection from a possibly infected or ‘carrier’ colleague at the workplace and infect someone at home. How do we deal with this situation ? We cannot be locked down forever.
Organizations across the spectrum will quickly need to tweak their office infrastructure to ensure there is social distancing in place, and adequate disinfection, at all times. They cannot afford to work at full staff capacity at any point in time. They will have to stagger attendance and work timings for office attendees, with the remainder of the staff , working from home. Productivity standard levels will need to be optimized to the new normal and commensurate new performance measure norms incorporated in HR practise as well. Companies that are into manufacturing with an assembly line production will need to get increasingly computerized, with adoption of Artificial Intelligence technology, if need be. They will have to gear up for a new age where remote functioning and operations from a computer at home, will become the norm. Today, if satellites that are several light years away in outer space can be monitored, regulated and controlled from earth, then there is no reason why technology cannot be adapted to ensure remote working and seamless assembly line manufacturing operations, at the click of a button from a computer , that sits out of a home. This will mean increasing levels of sophistication and automation in almost all sorts of manufacturing, with less room for human error and stringent quality and quantity standards. In the long run, this will augur well for the industry.
The pandemic will have sounded the death knell for some new age start ups which were in an expansion spree, burning cash to build scale and size. In the wake of diminishing income, they will find it difficult to sustain their business models. They will have to either quickly adapt, change their strategy or die. Some others like co-working spaces will find it hard to re-align their real estate strategy of sharing spaces and cramming people from several companies under one roof, sharing common facilities and amenities. They will see client attrition especially by small companies who operate out of them on a ‘pay-per-seat’ basis. Companies that are in the service industry will be fraught with serious existential dilemmas, especially the hospitality industry, with greater need for social distancing and demand for only quieter , less crowded hospitals, hotels, banks etc. The hospitality industry will need to reinvent itself with a new focus on door step delivery of services for the end consumer. It may mean curated holidays for the leisure or business traveler, with a well planned itinerary that keeps the individual at two metres distance from everybody always, in less crowded environs, be it at the hotel, company meeting or board room or a once crowded, frequently visited tourist spot. It may also mean that several self servicing options will now be made available to the end consumer by a bank, to discourage a branch visit or provide as much support as possible at home, without the need for stepping out. It may mean adoption of revolutionary methods like video chat, digital signatures, biometric identification, self certification and declaration for opening and closing accounts, regular day-to-day banking transactions and maintenance. The health sector will see patients seeking treatment over the phone, whatsapp and the likes, shunning hospital visits and restricting them to cases of hospitalization and critical illnesses’ treatment. Tele-medicine will become a choice rather than an option. Hospitals and pharmacies will start doors step services, as much as possible and this will become a new stream of revenue, that will displace conventional sources of income for a hospital. Schools will go completely online for kindergarten, primary and junior levels and pupils will attend schools physically from Grade Eight onwards with not more than twenty to thirty students in a class. Universities and colleges that once prided on a great campus atmosphere will now have to re-work their brand equity around the pedigree and quality of their faculty and online resources available to the learner. All this will continue until the world finds a vaccine against the Human Corona Virus, which may not be soon. Perhaps some of these trends will be here to stay and change our world forever.
The silver lining in all this would be, that the world slowly will transform for good with a cleaner environment, air and water where order, discipline, standing in queues and maintaining social distance will become a socio-cultural norm, across the globe, irrespective of how developed or poor a nation is. Internet speeds will determine the quality of life, work and industrial production. Internet will become an essential mandated commodity, by governments. All the discussion to police and monetize the internet, that the large internet companies indulged in prior to the pandemic will be a thing of the past and considered an antediluvian idea that will go out of the window. The world will finally become one large global village, with a shared sense of commitment and responsibility.

Black, Brown, Yellow or White : All Lives Matter.
Blog 6
The world has been engulfed in a racial conflagration over the last two weeks, after the bestial death of George Floyd in the hands of law enforcement officers. The raging fire around black lives, threatens to rip open the once raw festering wounds that have been kept sewed tight, over decades on American soil. The officers clearly went overboard in their call of duty, while arresting him and pinned him down by his neck, with reckless abandon, knowing jolly well that it could asphyxiate and endanger the life of any human being. There was no reason for the officer to do so to subdue him for restraint, especially when they had him outnumbered. The act was a reckless and barbaric one and deserves total condemnation. The autopsy report revealed significant levels of Fentanyl in the blood and also pointed to recent use of Methamphetamine by the deceased, a clear indication of drug overdose that may have exacerbated his death, caused primarily due to mechanical asphyxia and cardiopulmonary arrest.
America needs to ask itself why there is an irrational seething anger against the black community by the law keepers and also why the black community is perceived in a negative shade, quite often. Ever since the emancipation of the community, from the times of Abraham Lincoln, even though the community has slowly but steadily produced eminent men and women of stature, who have outshone several of their white counterparts, in their chosen spheres of influence, it still continues to become victims of racial bigotry. The predecessor to the current incumbent at the White House, was the first black president of the United States – the highest office in the land. It couldn’t have got better than that. In the ‘land of the free’, racial prejudice & crimes against coloured men & women are still irregularly regular. The Black community leaders in the US, on their part , also need to introspect if there is an incipient trend of people from their community indulging in drug and substance abuse, petty crimes, burglary, armed robbery, shoot outs etc, more than those from other communities, that makes them vulnerable. There needs to be a concerted effort by them to channelize the dreams and aspirations of the community in a positive manner. A lot needs to be done so that they are not perceived anti-establishment by the law keepers. Sloganeering, rallying and protesting against a racial crime is all good, but no effective guarantee against a repeat offense in the future. The ills of racial discrimination and unprovoked violence against men and women of colour, that plagues society must be nipped in the bud. Also on their part, law enforcement agencies and the cops in America and elsewhere need to be given a crash course in humility and respect for all lives, be it black, brown, yellow or white. A criminal is a criminal and has only vice & crime on his hands, and no colour, religion or ethnicity. Irrespective of a perpetrator’s origin, the law must take its due course, in the most neutral and humane manner.
The World needs to Stop, Start & Continue to do the following, to make this a better place to live for people of all hues, sizes and shapes :
STOP :
1. Racial Profiling by law enforcement agencies must stop, to start with. It only augments the underlying problem and doesn’t help change the perception of a community that has been victimized enough already.
2. Reservations of all kinds for any community anywhere need to stop, so that there is a sense of equanimity amongst all. Governments can always take other steps and welfare measures for better emancipation and involvement of people of different races, communities, religion and socio-economic strata in the democratic process and overall development.
3. Advertisements of all cosmetic products that endorse a fairer and clearer skin tone, indirectly hinting to the viewer that ‘fair is beautiful’ need to be banned & made punishable by law.
4. Community leaders must stop propagating retribution and making incendiary remarks against cops dealing with law breakers from their respective communities.
START :
1. Community level leadership and training programs focused at the jobless, widowed, orphaned and young with an aim to drive social discipline and commitment must be started in every district, county, town, village and city.
2. The local police forces must be involved with local communities by way of charity, public welfare and philanthropic activities, on an ongoing basis, apart from their core job of law keeping. This will ensure better bonding, understanding & respect for the members of the force amongst people.
CONTINUE :
1. All peaceful democratic protests against any form of injustice or violence against people of any community, no matter what their colour, must continue.
2. We must continue to practise the egalitarian principles enshrined in our constitution, which is the soul of every true vibrant democratic nation on the planet. And never compromise on it nor let anyone else jeopardize the same.
If all human beings, regardless of where we live, stop, start and continue the aforesaid, the world will be a better place to live in. Remember, God in his infinite wisdom made us all unique, man & woman, black, brown, yellow & white, in different hues, sizes & shapes, just as replete a garden is, with flowers and plants of different colours, varieties and sizes. Irrespective of colour, all lives matter. Who are we then to defy nature and attempt to script a sordid story of black & white racial prejudice on nature’s sublime canvas ?

Locked & down, yet not out : Tune that old guitar & shake a leg to Amazon Alexa
Blog 7
The lockdown may officially be over, but the lockdown hangover & blues are here to stay. People are still staying locked in and only stepping out on a ‘need-to’ basis. Day in & day out, people are falling into depression and there has been a reported rise in suicides, anxiety related psycho-somatic disorders, mental illnesses etc. There is an admitted general sense of foreboding and gloom because of the Corona pandemic. The fear of the unknown is gnawing at the average human mind, as if there is no tomorrow.
But no matter what the future holds, if you are still alive and well, you simply need to be obliged and wear a smile every day.You are amongst the chosen few whose lives have been spared by the dreaded virus.Thank God for every single passing day and be eternally grateful for small mercies in life because it’s a sign that he still loves you and has not given up on you. That’s all that’s required from us now. That coveted promotion at your job or bonus or that project you were supposed to undertake and which went on cold storage after the pandemic hit or that new college you were looking forward to joining, may all now be a ‘near-distant’ reality, if not missed altogether. However worrying about any one of them and wallowing in self pity and despair will serve no purpose and is absolutely futile. Worrying in these times, when every move we make is fully dependant on the pandemic situation and not dictated by our free will, is like sitting on a rocking chair; it gives us something to do and keeps us occupied, but it gets us no where !
So, what is the solution, how do we beat the Corona blues ? These are times when the entire family is locked in together, irrespective of whether we like it or not. It is not easy for the young, adults and children who are on different intellectual and emotional planes, with varying levels of tolerance of each other’s views and actions, to put up with each other 24X7, without the breather of a socializing break with other like-minded people. These are times which demand serious introspection into our current familial bonds and a golden opportunity to strengthen them. It may be an act of kindness in the kitchen or helping the women in the house, with some basic household chores or scheduling a Friday night family movie binge on Netflix or Amazon Prime or something as simple as sitting down together for a meal, as a family. For those staying alone as bachelors in cities and towns, away from their loved ones, this can be a time of self discovery, practicing restraint and indulging in new hobbies and vocations, from the confines of their homes. Grow that plant or vegetable at home. See how it takes shape in a pot. Take out that rustic guitar, tune it and strum along or shake a leg with Amazon Alexa to your favorite tune. Let the music drain out all the negative energy. If you are a movie buff, make that list of ‘100 movies to watch before you die’ ( The title may sound despondent but that is how you make that bucket list click !) And go after them one after the other, one day at a time. If you are into healthy living, go ahead and try out that new diet or if you love sweating it out by hitting the treadmill and love that Adonis look, this is the time to chisel those muscles extra with all the push ups and indoor weight training that you can indulge yourself in. If you are an avid reader, take time out to read that series which you last promised yourself to read, but couldn’t because of the mundane rut of the daily grind. Now is the time.
In spite of everything, if you still feel low and down, do not forget to pick that phone and speak to someone who you cannot ‘do without’ and share your burdens with them to lighten them. Do not bottle yourselves up, be bogged down, overwhelmed and choke up on emotion or a feeling of loss or hopelessness, no matter how bad the situation may seem to be. You may not be the only one going through a similar situation. There may be others facing the same demons and may just about know how to battle them, inside out, just because they have ‘been there, seen that, done that‘. You only need to ask. You will be surprised to learn that worries are so fickle and have a funny way of vaporizing, the moment they are shared, even though the underlying factor or the cause of the worry may not have been eliminated completely. It stops playing on your mind and your dominant calming self takes over and keeps things under control.
Therefore find your own mojo to break the blues, stay healthy, focused, sharp, happy and alert daily. Stay indoors by all means, but more importantly, keep growing every day. Remember today is not called the ‘present’ just like that, it is indeed a gift. So cherish, love and live it to the fullest. And let not anyone put you down, let alone a bug !

Living With the COVID 19 Virus & Defeating it Together
Blog 8
It has been 4 months, 15 days since the WHO declared COVID 19 a pandemic, after the outbreak first occurred in December 2019, in Wuhan, China. When we look back, there is fear in the air, albeit with a degree of nonchalance now, especially after the pandemic has worn us all out of patience and taught us, that all that matters in this world is our health. Everything else is secondary and follows later. The number of cases continue to spike globally, country after country ( North Korea of course is an exception. Well then, whatever information comes out from behind the Pyongyang Iron curtain is anyway always censored, double filtered and conveniently doctored before being shared with the world. No surprises there ! One can only feel sorry for the citizens of that country). Countries, where one thought the disease has plateaued have also seen a surge in re-infections. Certain other countries like India, Russia , South Africa etc who started off well by thwarting the infection spread at the outset with total lockdowns now see themselves topping the charts ( are the now heightened levels of testing the reason for the delayed climb, possibly yes). There are others who were the poster boys of the infection spread like Italy, Spain, Iran, UK etc, which are now better off than other countries, with lower levels of new cases being reported. Others like Germany, Sweden , Australia, New Zealand & Finland seem to have done a commendable job in containing the spread, with their prudent and calculated approach. Surprisingly, the country which started this all – China, has fallen down to the middle rungs & is sitting pretty there. Where is the world headed from here ?
There are people who have lost loved ones, young couples who had dreams of a life of togetherness with each other suddenly find themselves alone, angry & sad; children who have been orphaned suddenly for no fault of theirs and a promising childhood robbed off them; elders who looked forward to living to a ripe old age with their children, grand children & great grandchildren suddenly have been called to their eternal homes, pre-maturedly. Companies which had plans of growth & expansion, corporate leaders and executives who had plans of moving around in search of greener pastures either find themselves hanging by a thread, barely surviving, in their respective jobs, with no takers elsewhere or find themselves already retrenched. Students who had aspirations of starting a brand new academic year by getting into their desired colleges & new classrooms find themselves locked in and confined to their computer screens. The virus has brought everything to a grinding halt. What next ? Where do we go from here and pick the threads to start again ?
No other war or epidemic that the world has seen so far can match the sheer number of deaths and the scale of people infected/affected across the maximum number of nations. COVID 19 pandemic beats everything hands down. It is high time the UN designates the situation arising out of this pandemic as World War III, as an exception & invokes all war time emergency measures. The situation warrants a ‘new’ allied and collaborative , ‘all hands on deck‘ approach to stem the spread of the virus, else the time may not be far when we stare at total annihilation of our communities world wide, if not large swathes of population in several countries. The time to follow a myopic country specific approach is over. And if that again means imposing lockdowns across nations, so be it. Countries need to build and develop capacities during these lockdowns. They need to take advantage of the lockdowns to scale & ramp up medical infrastructure and testing facilities, research on the pathogenesis of the disease and the possible sequelae in patients who have recovered from the illness, coupled with ‘state-of-the-art’ intensive care support system. This should be a time to ensure every life on the planet is documented, monitored and measured for safety and security. The virus may have hit us where it hurts the most – our economies & livelihoods. But it is better to endure a little pain for a little longer in the larger interest of humanity and instead follow a concerted approach to find a solution to the problem rather than have random ‘piecemeal strategies’. There are numerous reports doing the rounds of vaccines being developed in several countries. Apparently more than 200 vaccine candidates are in various stages of development world wide. The Oxford University research team led vaccine showed success triggering some immune response in subjects who received the shots, there are several others in Canada, India, China, US & Europe which have entered human testing trials, as I write this. But how collaborative has the research been ? Has there been knowledge sharing so that different labs in different countries don’t waste time in reinventing the wheel all over , after making errors which could be avoided in the first place, basis experience of each other in working with the virus, vaccine development stages that they are working on and knowledge sharing and transfer basis their personal experiences & inputs ? Have the best minds across the globe been roped in for vaccine research & development ? These are moot questions that world leaders need to answer collectively. On the contrary, we read of countries working on acing each other in the race for a vaccine and accusing each other of stealing research data. That is not what we want to hear now. It will instead be prudent for all to collaborate in vaccine research and jointly ‘nip it once & for all in the bud‘. Unlike in the past say during the WWII, we are fortunate now, to be living in times where information travels at the speed of thought and the best possible collaboration can be made possible from across the world, by employing the best contemporary brains, in no time ! It is of paramount importance that countries and pharmaceutical companies set aside their vested commercial interests over COVID 19. It is payback time for the virus now and a golden opportunity to create a new world , where there is seamless collaboration and a collective responsibility of shared resources to lift lives out of poverty, ill health & poor sanitary care. The choice is in our hands, if we want the virus to win or mankind to. The World is watching and the leaders who spearhead this revolution will go down in the annals of time, as the ones who shaped a new world order and re-shaped the destiny of mankind.

Who must Joe Biden pick as running mate for the 2020 US Presidential Elections ?
Blog 9
Speculation is rife about who Joe Biden will pick as his running mate for the 2020 Presidential campaign. He has promised to choose a female candidate for the same. It will be interesting to see who he picks. While popular media in the US and political pundits have already zeroed in on the possible choices, will he pick from among them or is it going to be a dark horse ? While the role of a US Veep may be ceremonial with restricted duties, the role assumes significance in a multi-polar world that is battling serious, if not muted threats to US hegemony across global institutions and it’s long established ‘Big Brother’ role. The choice of a running mate will hence be critical for the message the Presidential candidate sends out to the electorate. The key factors that Joe Biden’s team need to bear in mind before deciding on the name can be summed up as below :
(i) GENDER :
The US has historically never had a female Vice President. Surprisingly though, women in US administration have done remarkably well be it in gubernatorial or secretarial roles. In the recent years, Madeline Albright, Condoleezza Rice & Hillary Clinton as US Secretary of State were the cynosure of eyes and commanded fierce stage presence on international forums. However , only two times, women were given a ticket to run along with the Presidential candidate. The first time, it was in 1984, when Geraldine Ferraro was chosen as the running mate to Democratic Presidential nominee, Walter Mondale and again after a gap of 24 years, in 2008, Sarah Palin, the then Governor of Alaska, was chosen as the Vice Presidential running mate to Republican Presidential nominee John McCain, who lost the election bitterly to Barak Obama, the first black man to occupy the office of the US President. It will be prudent for Biden’s campaign managers to examine why Walter Mondale & John McCain lost the race, and if choice of their running mates could anyway have helped, lift their sagging fortunes. Joe Biden’s managers need to look for a woman of substance who can complement and boost Biden’s chances in the race to the White House. The individual must be able to stand their ground on their own and beat the present incumbent in any debate, hands down.
(ii) RACE :
There is no better time than this, to opt for a running mate that reflects America’s multi-cultural &multi-ethnicity. Biden & team have a golden opportunity to show the world & America that his deputy is not only a powerful woman but also a woman of color, who has made it big of her own accord & merit and why America needs to vote for him so that together they can stem the rot of racial bigotry that is gnawing at the foundations of the World’s oldest democracy. This is a golden opportunity for him to show why his running mate deserves to sit in the Veep’s office, along with him in the Oval Office. This could turn out to be Biden’s ‘Trump card’ ( pun intended).
(iii) POWER OF TWO VERSUS ONE :
While Biden’s short list of women comprise some of his opponents, this is a time to bury his hatchet and for rapprochement. His running mate must not only add energy to his campaign and credibility to the issues that he stands for, but also bring in organic growth to his current vote bank, by adding to his supporter base, the running mate’s voter base. This will swell the ranks of people who want to see him in the White office and enhance his popularity levels. The choice of his mate must help him jump up the ranks.
(iv) LEGACY OF HIS VICE PRESIDENCY :
This is an Opportunity for Joe Biden to further the legacy of his Vice presidency and all the good that the Obama administration stood for. It is time to remind voters how conservative voters rallied behind McCain in an attempt to sabotage the chances of a Black from occupying the President’s post and how America defied all odds to set an example by electing Obama to office. This may also be a time to remind voters how the Obama-Biden administration stood for egalitarian values and never had a ‘George Floyd‘ episode to tarnish their image. Voters need to resonate with a view of how America badly needs a change again !
(v) LAYING THE FOUNDATION FOR A FEMALE US PRESIDENT :
It beats me that smaller countries and poorer nations have had women occupy the highest office in the land for decades now while the land of the free, the US is yet to see a woman President. The last time Hillary fought the election, she lost to Trump. However, this is an opportunity for the Democrats to prepare solid ground for their future female American Presidential candidate by honing and developing her skills by working closely with an incumbent, as Veep, first. She could potentially then be a very difficult candidate to defeat in the hustings.
So will it be Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Susan Rice, Karen Bass or someone else ? We are watching.

Kamala Harris, it is people, and vote her in, you must !
Blog 10
Kamala Harris is a firecracker of a choice as running mate to Joe Biden. This announcement by Joe Biden couldn’t have come at a more opportune time than now. The US is reeling under a racial backlash, which threatens to hollow out the very foundation, on which that great democracy was built, nurtured & matured, over generations by it’s founding fathers. The present incumbent at the White House is a much ridiculed figure, who is known for his obstinate repugnance of time tested values of tolerance, co-existence & sanctioned immigration. It is ironical how he continues to eschew this path, in spite of being married to someone who was born outside the United States, not once but twice ( including the present US First Lady). Therefore it was disgusting when Trump cast a false aspersion on Kamala, as someone not born in the US, which of course was another one of his shameless lies. Agree, that one couldn’t have expected any better from him, but does this also mean that the President has silently and unwittingly acknowledged how formidable his opponent duo are ?
It is not going to be a home run for President Trump at the hustings. With an all time low rating and the constant flip-flops on the measures being taken to arrest the COVID 19 pandemic, if there was anyone at the White House who doesn’t deserve a second chance , it is him. Let alone the carnage & fury that engulfed the nation from coast to coast, over the custodial killing of George Floyd, the way he dealt with with the pandemic and endangered the lives of millions in America is enough to weed him out of office. It was ridiculous how he showed his disdain for masks, when the scientific community advocated it. When the whole world went into a measured lockdown, at the outset of the pandemic, he refused to toe the line and continued with his headstrong resolve to keep America running, with no central administrative drive on social distancing. It was only when all hell broke loose , with hospitals over flowing with positive cases and deaths that there was an acknowledgement of the gravity of the situation by the POTUS. Even then, except for veiled threats to China & the WHO, what was done was ‘too little and too late’. By then the World’s largest & most developed economy had climbed the charts with the maximum number of COVID cases & mortalities. It was the biggest disservice any President could have done to the people of his nation. And it did not stop at that. The mindless opening of schools in the US leaving scores of children infected, was a callous act that could have been avoided, with careful planning & execution. The current President has focused too long & too much on what is wrong with his detractors and opponents, instead of focusing on fixing what ain’t right with the civil society and the economy in America.
On issues that are of paramount importance to the masses, Kamala has been known to be a vocal advocate & the poster girl of all the good , that America – the land of the free, has stood for , over the many years. Kamala can not only connect with the Black & ethnic communities, given her background, she can also resonate with the average White population. She can be the unifying force behind which every voter can unite, to see through it that a businessman like Trump doesn’t run the highest office of the land, like his personal fiefdom, who cares two hoots about equality and all other democratic values enshrined in the American Constitution. His government came with the promise of protectionism and all things good for American, but somewhere amidst all the vitriolic rhetoric, used to pander to the conservative masses, it has been conveniently forgotten that the foremost duty of the government is to serve the citizens. Post her announcement as the presumptive Democratic Vice Presidential nominee, ‘Twitter-sphere’ went berserk with excitement. Her tweet on how she has handled serious issues all her career & how she knows a ‘predator when she sees one’ ( was that a not-so-subtle hint at the mighty Donald Trump ?) caught everyone’s rapt attention. It is obvious that in any Presidential debate, she can make mince meat out of Mike Pence and is a far formidable running mate for a US Presidential hopeful, than one has seen in several years. Kudos to her fighting spirit, thanks to her immigrant parents, who worked hard to embrace the American way of life and assimilated the ethos of the country and it’s culture.
Undoubtedly, it is time for a change & the entire nation, Republican, Democrat & the fence sitter need to rally behind Joe Biden & Kamala Harris and vote them to power. The office of the President of the United States, for all it’s glory, stature & the power it wields among the comity of nations, has been reduced to a caricature , thanks to the present incumbent and needs a leader it truly deserves. By no stretch of imagination, can the US of A nor the world endure another tenure by Trump. And it is now up to America to make it happen, for every vote counts !

What must we change to adapt to live in the times of CORONA & a post COVID world?
Blog 11
Horrible, Disastrous, Uncertain, bleak future, no hope in sight. These are the words that would probably come out, if the common man on the ground, is queried now. But is this the end of the world, that we must all burrow our heads in fear and wallow in self pity ? Is there no light at the end of the tunnel, proverbially speaking ? The answer is a whopping ‘No’, irrespective of the doomsday scenario looming large, even though the scale of economic destruction and the cascading trail on our social fabric, that Corona is leaving may be unprecedented. When Corona first emerged, it cast a noose around the society and undeniably, with every single passing day, the noose is getting tighter around the neck, with more people becoming victims to it & falling like leaves. Earlier the infirm & old ones with pre-existing co-morbid conditions were under the scanner ( they continue to be vulnerable), but now irrespective of age, gender, color & creed, the death list has them all. The virus appears to be more just in it’s distribution, than we humans have ever been & shows no bias or prejudice. How do we deal with a virus like this, which is determined to clean up one third of all humanity and reset the World Population Clock ?
There is a lot of action going on across governments to develop a vaccine for the Virus and the race for it is getting hotter. However, whether there is a concerted approach among governments, is a question that still remains largely unsatisfactorily unanswered. Day in & Day out , news trickles in, of either the ‘Sputnik’ vaccine not triggering an adequate immune response as it was expected to, or a temporary pause in the ‘Oxford’ Vaccine development because of hitting a few roadblocks. Vaccine development against the backdrop of a virus that has clearly mutated, from the time it first appeared, is no mean task. The World has not forgotten the innumerable viruses, that have plagued the African continent over decades – Ebola, Zika etc against which, we still don’t have confirmed vaccines. These viruses petered down on their own. Of course, there have been several experimental vaccine candidates which were tried on many, but none that has been licensed so far, for mass production. Are we staring at a similar fate for Corona ? I don’t want to hazard a guess now, but I have a bad feeling, that it is going to be the case ! How do we live in a world with Corona & what is our best ammunition to protect our people ? Unprecedented situations & times demand an unprecedented action plan. The following come to mind :
1. Public Sanitation & Civic Hygiene : You cannot shut yourself inside for ever, out of fear of the virus. Eventually, you will need to step out to work and make the economy tick. Testing, contact tracing, more testing, isolation, quarantine & treatment is fine and needs to continue on a war footing. More than all that we need to break the chain, aim for herd immunity and ensure that we stem the spread. Our public places, parking lots, roads, offices, schools, hospitals, parks, stadia, subways, public transit points , buses, trams, trains, planes, airports, railway stations, bus depots etc all need to be constantly fumigated, scrubbed and cleaned with Monopersulphate Compound or Sodium Hypochlorite. This must become part of the daily routine. While this will be easy to implement in western countries with robust well oiled muncipal systems, the developing & third world countries have no option but to institutionalize this process and make this part of their DNA, if they want to beat the virus. If you are pinning all hopes on a vaccine that will come and be the panacea to this crisis, then you are living in a fool’s paradise. This is also an Opportunity in disguise, especially the developing world to develop and implement a healthy living concept for it’s masses, where cleanliness, public sanitation, civic hygiene become the gold standard and everyone takes collective ownership of the same. If a mass immunization campaign like the one for Polio can succeed, then there is no reason why this won’t. It’s all about the willingness & determination of governments along with private partnership and full public endorsement to make this happen.
2. Social Distancing : The oxymoron that the word is , the concept is not foolish : Social distancing is here to stay and can be a life saver going forward, Corona or no Corona. Crowding in public places, that we see in several countries, especially the developing world with no respect for one’s personal space will need to go and become a thing of the past. People will need to be educated vide a mass public campaign on the health benefits of steering clear of another’s private space and not being exposed to what they expel from their natural orifices. They need to be educated to keep distance from each other while standing in a line, commuting in public transport or interacting with one another at their workplace or simply while enjoying a football match. All construction of buildings and public amenities must factor provision for adequate social distancing, so that this becomes a habit by design and is not optional any more. Today there is Corona, tomorrow there could be something else. It will be wise to be future ready.
3. Personal Hygiene & Health Education : Mandatory Health Education and personal hygiene classes for everyone. This must not only become a part of all school & college curricula, but also become part of ongoing ‘Continuing Education‘ (CE) courses for employees working in both private & public organizations. These need to be made mandatory for all employees and credits need to be awarded for the same. These Credits must become essential for career progression and increments. We need a well rounded, health conscious population, which will appreciate and understand the need to stay clean, healthy and follow social distancing norms in public. And a beginning can be made if we start now and in the right away, so that in an individual’s life cycle irrespective of what skills he learns, acquires , develops and in due course of time forgets, he remembers his or her lessons on personal hygiene and health for life.
4. An ‘all hands on the deck‘ approach with Universalization of Medical Education : There are several first world countries with a very low population growth rate or a declining birth rate, which rely on immigrant labour force. Immigration is central to running their economies, in the wake of an ageing workforce. However the irony of the whole thing is that they do not recognize professional degrees obtained from another country like human medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, nursing etc without licensing them again. While a license is mandatory to practise in these professions anywhere in the world, the journey to obtain a license takes almost half a decade and practically involves re-inventing the wheel all over, for students and immigrant health care practitioners with prior experience in their field, in their native country, involving an almost repeat education, encompassing studying again and sitting for exams. This is a colossal waste of precious years and resources, where several talented and experienced doctors and nurses, end up being of no use in their new countries, for a long time ( some eventually give up and either return back in frustration or do something else ) simply because the system fails to recognize and utilize their talents and abilities, for want of a local medical education degree. This is counter productive, especially when you have already had a formal education and possess a degree. You cannot be deemed second class professionals simply because your degree is from a second or third world country. Remember, these professionals would have slogged their way up in their native countries to get admission in those medical, veterinary, dental or nursing colleges and would be some of the best minds amongst their population, to have earned those degrees. While they may not have any experience of a first world hospital setting, they would know as much as the others locally, about their subject. Besides, they will bring with them experience of working in a hospital setting in their native countries of origin. Also, don’t forget , at the same time ,while the system tags them as ‘not ready for practise ‘ in their new countries, tourists or foreigners who visit these second world countries, when sick or for medical tourism get treated very well and attended to by the same doctors and nurses ! The same doctors attend international conferences and seminars during which they exchange ideas and learning, with their counterparts in the West. Ironically, if they decide to practise in the other’s country, the journey becomes next to impossible. It is our loss if we cannot assimilate them into the system faster, so that they can start contributing to the health sector and the larger economy. When the world needs more doctors and especially in a situation like this, where we are facing the ills of Corona, which warrants’all hands on the deck‘, it is important that countries which welcome immigrant doctors, veterinarians & nurses have a simpler path to fast track their entry into the system, within 6 months. They should be licensed with a basic examination and mandatorily made to intern with a local practise, under supervision, before being allowed to see patients independantly. It is important that medical education is universally accepted, acknowledged and recognized.
5. Wearing a Mask in Public & carrying a Sanitizer : While it goes without saying now, this may sound weird in a post Corona world. But it will make sense to continue with this practise, as a recommendation , especially if one is not well & carries a respiratory ailment. This must become a norm and endorsed by governments and health department officials. Staying covered , constant hand washing and sanitizing our hands will help curtail the chain of transmission of several air borne infections and also protect the ones with poor immunity from contracting an infection. The mask & the ubiquitous hand sanitizer has anyway become part of our garb and culture and it is better that they stay as essential accessories in our bags, long after Corona is gone.
The World is facing a pandemic of epic proportions and it is silently alerting mankind to get back to the drawing board and chalk out a new public- private health plan and policy. Let us not miss the bus, in the wait for the vaccine.

COVID 19 Status Check: The POTUS & the FLOTUS are positive now !
Blog 12

Can business now be 'as usual' in a COVID Positive Economy ?
The Buck Stops here
The US President was quite vocal with his oft dismissive attitude towards the wearing of masks & social distancing, ever since the pandemic surfaced on American soil. His frequent ‘give a damn’ demeanor has been decried by the press and fellow Americans, even as the pandemic surged and the ranks of the affected swelled over the last few months. There was an attempt in the early weeks to paint a picture of a resilient America, unwilling to relent to the might of this puny little virus and several economic activities continued with nonchalance in the US capital and several states, untill slowly the US climbed up the charts to become the country that was the worst affected by this health crisis, by sheer numbers. Today, as you read this, there is a palpable sense of fear and disdain for the way the US handled this crisis. The COVID 19 pandemic was nothing short of a war of gargantuan proportions, declared on mankind by the Chinese. The US has always been in the forefront to nip ‘Weapons of Mass Destruction’ ( WMD) in the bud and taken the necessary initiatives to teach a befitting lesson to those who hoard WMD and threaten to decimate human population. Then what went wrong this time ? Why was the US President Trump caught napping ? Let’s look at a few plausible reasons :
1. Giant Spider in the Web :
The guilty party here was no Middle Eastern kingdom, a despotic communist regime nor a banana republic that would kowtow to the American military, but this time, the giant spider in the web was the People’s Republic of China, arguably one of the largest military and nuclear powers on the face of the planet, that could imperil the lives of Americans, let alone US soldiers, in the event of a face off. So a military operation to know what was actually happening behind the Red Iron Curtain, especially in Wuhan, during the early days of the pandemic was next to impossible. Also, not to forget the nation is a permanent member of the UN Security Council and any action against it could easily have been vetoed.
2. Delayed understanding & misreading of the calamitous nature of the Virus :
No one can deny that not a living soul on the planet had a clue that an RNA virus could wreck such havoc in such a short span of time, especially when such similar viruses like SARS, MERS, H1N1 etc have come and gone with relatively restricted geographical spread and damage. The pathogenesis, virulence and mutating ability of this virus was grossly under-estimated and took everyone by surprise. By the time the realization came, it was a ‘too late to act’ ( TLTA ) scenario & countries and economies had gone into a lockdown.
3. Attempts to ring fence American Business Interests on Chinese soil :
It’s an open secret that China is the factory of the world, manufacturing virtually every conceivable consumable item. Scores of American companies have outsourced their manufacturing to entities in China, who do the job at half the cost it would have taken to manufacture in the US. Understandably a full blown escalation would have jeorpardized their interests and escalated matters to hit the US the hardest, where it would hurt the most – it’s economy.
4. Refusal to play down on the ‘Big Brother’ Act :
By virtue of it’s geographical separation, the US has largely been insulated from the crisises that generally plague the Asian, African or European continents and tend to spill over to other countries, in some form or the other. This came as a shock and there was a reluctance to acknowledge that finally the US has also been drawn into something , not of their own volition. The US is always used to playing ‘Big Brother’ to others in crisis and therefore found it difficult and refused to shed that image to brace quickly for damage control of the rapidly evolving situation, on it’s own soil. To add to it, the Oval Office’s present incumbent’s cockiness did not help make things better.
5. Fear of losing World dominance & yielding the No.1 Spot to the Chinese :
It does seem that the US was in a denial mode for long, out of fear of the economy going into a tailspin and out of fear of Chinese hegemony & control of world trade. In 2019, China’s GDP reached 99.1 trillion RMB Yuan ( $ 14.2 trillion) , which was an increase of 6.1 %, and per capita disposable income of China’s residents exceeded $ 4350. China’s infrastructure construction continues to be enormous. By Jul 2020, it’s operational railway length reached 141,000 km, ranking 2nd in the world, while the high speed rail network was numero uno in the world with a total length of 36000 km, roughly about 70 % of the global high speed network. Chinese companies continue to grow. 124 companies from the Chinese mainland & Hong Kong appeared on the latest Fortune Global 500 list, overtaking 121 from the US and finishing 1st in the World. Hence it was no wonder that Uncle Sam stayed put, in spite of Corona and kept it’s economy buzzing for a while, until all hell broke lose and then had to shut down some sectors in phases.
6. Personality Traits of Trump rubbing in on the Oval Office :
Donald Trump’s belligerent arrogant personality and carefully cultivated tough image that refuses to heed easily to advise, except when it comes from his close knit coterie, is also to blame for the swift inaction and tardiness to put a plan in place to arrest the spread of the pandemic. Not to mention, his constant flip flops and blame game with the WHO cost America precious time and lives.
Now with the POTUS & the FLOTUS testing positive & being moved to the secure Walter Reed Medical facility, ‘out of abundant caution’ , Trump must surely be seized of the seriousness of the matter and the gravity of the situation. If he still hasn’t , Americans only have themselves to blame for voting him into power. The moot point now is for US Inc to think how to keep the US economy running. Can it be business as usual or will companies in the US , majority of which are already working from home, take a step back to pause, reflect and re-orient the way they do business. There is not an iota of doubt that world over , the way business happens is up for a massive overhaul. The virus is not going anywhere soon. Companies need to shed flab not by letting people go, but by giving up on massive redundant office spaces, which are no longer useful, especially if work can be done from home. The concept of a ‘home -office’ is here to stay and virtual meetings are the new order, with digital payments & cashless transactions, being the new currency. There is a need for a heightened need for security, safety and comfort, while traveling now. Aircraft seating arrangements need to reflect the new world , where social distancing is not a temporary fad, but the new normal. The interiors of an aircraft, airport and airport lounges need to reflect the new reality. The sooner airlines adapt to this realization, the faster they can take to the skies with a confident bunch of travelers. Likewise for buses, trains, trams & all other public modes of transport. Schools, Colleges & Offices whenever they open, need to have staggered timings so that students and employees can come & go in shifts. Manufacturing industries need to adopt high end technology where remote operation , monitoring and surveillance of the assembly line and warehouse facility, becomes a reality. The number of people ferried by public transport needs to be fixed and must become inviolable. Buses, trams, trains & subway systems cannot run packed like before. That is a thing of the past. Society needs to de-congest at every level. If we can pull this off, then we are ready to open up and do business as usual, in a COVID positive economy & much after, it is gone.

2021 : Get Ready for Biden-Harris
Blog 13
Much water has flown down the Potomac since I wrote last and we have a brand new administration ready to take over the reins at Washington D.C, in less than a month in the new year. It is definitely going to be a year of reckoning for the American population, what with the much needed clean up act , post all the shenanigans and misadventures during the Trump tenure. There can be no denying that it was more of a Trump ‘regime’ than an Administration. The way Donald Trump ran the Oval Office was deplorable. For the first time in public memory, the President’s Office was run like a family feifdom. His family members enjoyed key positions in the Administration, with absolutely no background of public policy making or International diplomacy, in stark contrast to previous administrations. His detractors & vocal opponents from within his own government, were sacked with reckless abandon as if he were changing clothes. There was a President who was averse to advise and constructive criticism. It was always ‘his way or the highway’ ! Perhaps it is no wonder that Trump’s dictatorial mindset continues to embolden him to think that he cannot vacate office as he ‘simply has not lost the election’ .The US President’s Office is presumably his birth right , which he will relinquish , only when he deems appropriate. Donald Trump was an aberration of a President that history will remember for all the wrong reasons. He is also testament to how muscle power & money can buy one a ticket to the Presidency of the World’s oldest and most vibrant democracy. The new administration will do America & the world a huge favor by amending laws to ensure that future US Administrations are not run like dictatorships.
What next now ? What can the world expect from the Biden-Harris Administration that takes charge on Jan 20th 2021 ? Joe Biden has come to power with a thumping margin of the popular vote and is riding a wave of hope. The Challenges that this Administration face are unprecedented and daunting. How the Biden-Harris team navigates them will determine the course of the nation in the coming decade.
Challenge # 1 : COVID Crisis
The biggest challenge this Administration will have to take heads on, will be stamping out the Corona virus spread and containing the transmission, with quick implementation of prophylactic measures in the form of rapid mass vaccination of the population and strict implementation of social distancing norms across the board. There is no time now to do a post mortem if a concerted political will with a stricter lock down and mask adherence would have helped pare the numbers, during the early months of the pandemic. With news emerging of a mutant strain in UK and an ageing population, it is also time to plug loop holes in the health administration. Dr. Anthony Fauci’s office needs to be given the leeway it deserves to chalk out contingency measures, vaccine distribution strategy that covers the maximum population in the least amount of time. By publicly taking the vaccine, the President-Elect & the VP-Elect have sent out a strong message to the hoi polloi that it is indeed safe to take the vaccine.
Challenge # 2 : Corporate America
Corporate America needs to consolidate its position & stem the damages that it has suffered because of the pandemic worldwide. It needs to get back on its feet swiftly but with caution. American companies & their subsidiaries, entities & affiliates worldwide have been impacted because of the pandemic and the sequalae of consequent intermittent lock downs across nations. This is no time to scale down but to ramp up operations and lift the sagging morale of their workforce worldwide, whose personal lives have been impacted in some form or the other because of the pandemic. The President-elect must have a clear cut strategy and plan to ensure USA Inc finds its feet soon. The US of A alone can thwart the monopolistic designs of the Chinese. Remember a capitalist yet democratic America is the only answer to the hegemony of a Communist China.
Challenge # 3 : Climate Change
The US must assume its rightful place in the global high table for championing and protecting us against Climate Change. The Paris Accord needs to be re-visited and driven through to its logical conclusion. In the absence of the US not donning its responsibility, it was sad to see teenagers like Greta Thunberg picking up their gauntlets and being more vocal than elected government representatives, in their desperation to make their voices heard. Environmental disasters are only waiting to happen. Let not COVID-19 be forgotten soon. If a 70-90 nm virus can shut down economies & make the world go into a tizzy, imagine what a man made environmental catastrophe can cause. The US must lead the charge of the brigade against Climate Change & the onus is on Joe Biden and his team to drive this.
Challenge # 4 : Foreign Policy
The US Foreign Policy underwent a paradigm shift under Donald Trump with pull outs from several war torn regions of the world, in the garb of ‘America First’ and antagonizing several nations with a belligerent attitude. American interests worldwide have grown over the years and their partnership with allies like UK, Israel, India, Australia, Canada , New Zealand , Saudi Arabia, Qatar etc have only grown multifold under serving American Presidents, including Donald Trump and it will only continue to do so. A strife ridden Middle East needs America to keep Jihadist elements at check and not allowing miscreants from toppling elected governments/existing ruling families and taking over the oil rich swathes of the desert. Similarly, the semblance of balance in Afghanistan & Iraq would not have been possible today, had it not been for the US forces that were stationed on the ground. The Biden-Harris administration needs to have a very strong Secretary of State and a Secretary of Defense, who have their eyes and ears to the ground and will be the guiding lights to the Prez & the Veep while navigating the goalposts of foreign policy.
Challenge # 5 : Racism & religious Bigotry
The US has always prided itself as the ‘land of the free’ and it is this value of liberty and fraternity that made it what it is today. Hate crimes, racist violence, intolerance towards people of different faiths have no place in a civilized society. The Biden-Harris duo make a great team that not only represents solidarity, unity in diversity and what people from differing backgrounds can achieve if they work together. The world has been watching in silence at the apathy & indifference being meted out to Rohingyas in Myanmar-Bangladesh, Uighur Muslims in China and religious minorities in several other countries. This needs to change. Religious bigotry & racial intolerance is ‘unthinkable’ in this century, when there are far more existential problems that mankind faces. How one looks, what one wears, what one eats, how one dresses, who one worships is a personal thing and cannot and must not be mandated by state policy. Governments have no business dictating that. A lot of garbage gets trashed around by countries advising others not to meddle in their internal affairs, whenever someone questions or flags any reported incident/crime of religious or racial hatred. This must stop. Human beings anywhere in the world are the same physiologically and we are the same species everywhere. No one must tolerate nor allow anyone to inflict religious hatred or racial crime on others. Who better than the World’s oldest and most developed democracy to champion this ?
As we enter 2021, the new US govt has its job cut out and the Biden Harris duo will be the cynosure of all eyes worldwide, as they take their place among world leaders. Here’s wishing them the very best and all of us a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year . Cheers.

It is Christmas , the Season of
Hope :
Break free & Bounceback
Blog 14
What a roller coaster year, this has been. I remember vividly the Christmas of 2019 and before I could process what was happening in the New Year of 2020, COVID struck and threw all our lives in disarray. Touche. The last 9 months went by locked down at home, fighting for the survival of one’s own mortal self, the family’s & one’s own workplace. And slowly one adapted to the ‘Work From Home’ culture, albeit however challenging it was. Before the COVID vaccine rolls out for the masses, Christmas of 2020 is here. I am sure most of us would like to forget 2020, when we look back in time, on a latter date.
Now that its Christmas, amidst all the gloom, there is a feeling of hope, tugging at our hearts, no matter how religious or profane one is. It doesnt matter if you have always looked at Christmas as just another day of the year, blown out of proportion by companies, trying to sell you everything from underwears at a discounted price to pet food at never believe rates, all desperate to rake in the moolah, riding on the festive spirit. Trust me, this year has been such a dampener that one can only be grateful for small mercies and be thankful for any good thing, that comes one’s way, irrespective of whether it’s Christmas gift-wrapped or not. This Christmas, there are many of us who may not be ‘locked in’ but ‘locked away’ from our loved ones. The usual family reunion has been relegated to Cisco Webex & Zoom meetings, out of fear of the virus. For the religious Christmassy kinds, this year caroling has been restricted to watching online videos, church virtual services and audio run-ins of carols sung in beat boxing style at home, for that little extra zing to ring in the festive cheer on Christmas eve ( remember the capella group : Pentatonix ? ). Several families across the world will be celebrating Christmas very differently this year, but what will emerge stronger than ever this year, will be the feeling of hope for the coming year, the emergence of a mutant strain of the COVID 19 virus in UK, notwithstanding.
The speed with which vaccines have come out has been a tremendous relief. Announcement of detailed last mile distribution strategy by governments of countries worst affected by the pandemic, would be the best Christmas gift this year. But alas, barring photo ops of a few leaders & brave frontline workers being administered the vaccine, tangible ground breaking announcements are still to come. However, there is hope that before the end of the year, it will be a reality. This Christmas, let us not wallow in self pity, sadness or despair, for there is indeed ‘light at the end of the tunnel’. Remember, ‘HIS strength will be made perfect in our weakness’. Just when you are thinking of giving up, rise and stand on HIS shoulders and soar with wings like eagles. If 2020 saw the fortunes of OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime & YouTube videos rise and movie theatres plummet, 2021 promises to be different. Among the horde of movies that have were postponed for release this year , we will get to see Daniel Craig one last time in “No Time to Die” as James Bond, before he signs off in 2021. Eddie Murphy fans can look forward to a laughter riot that “Coming2America” promises to be. Not to be left behind in the new year, will be the Disney fan club with a promise of 2 releases : “Cruella” and “Raya and the Last Dragon “. All of you geeks out there can look forward to disruptive technological product launches from companies of the likes of Apple, Samsung etc. For the motor aficionados, almost all car companies : Lexus, Kia, Nissan, Honda, Mercedes Benz, Tesla have promised innovative launches & product refreshes. By the way, Elon Musk will make a splash landing on Mars in style in 2021, in all likelihood. And come July 2021, Tokyo Olympics will happen, celebrating the indomitable spirit of fortitude and sportsmanship, in spite of Corona. The virus may have stalled several things worldwide, but it can never put us down for good. Humankind will bounce back with vengeance in 2021 . There is no sunset without the promise of a brand new morning. It’s only about how many hours of the night we are into, before the break of dawn. Therefore, before you know this will also be over. Hence it would be worthwhile for us to break free of those self deprecating thoughts, shrug those unfortunate addictions acquired during the lockdown & locked in moments and decide emphatically to bounce back and make a positive difference in our own personal lives and those around us. Its ok, go get yourself a shot of the Christmas spirit this year, even if you think you are too old to believe in Santa Claus or too modern for religion . Just go ahead and pile it on. You deserve it.
Have yourself a Very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year !

Trump must be re-impeached
& unceremoniously dismissed.
Blog 15
It definitely was no Happy New Year for the United States of America. What unfolded on Capitol Hill was sacrilege and nothing short of domestic terrorism induced by state actors, with the incumbent US President Donald Trump being solely responsible. At the rally in Ellipse Park, in plain speak, Donald Trump charged & exhorted his supporters to march towards Capitol Hill. The sitting President deserves to be charged for colluding with the perpetrators of violence and must be tried for this federal crime of inciting a riot. It is preposterous that even now Trump refuses to acknowledge the fair results of a democratically fought Presidential election & had been constantly making provocative statements through social and other electronic media, egging his misguided supporters to ‘do all it takes’ to ensure he continues in office. He has become so delusional & tyrannic and his attempts to thwart a peaceful transition to the new administration is appalling. This is what happens when the system allows an autocratic capitalist to occupy the highest office of the land, who cares two hoots about propriety and decorum. On Jan 6th, as the world watched with shock & dismay, when the US Congress was gobsmacked by rioters making merry and ransacking , in one single master stroke, Trump relegated America’s status from a mature democracy ( the nation he so very wanted to ‘make great again’ ) to that of a banana republic . Shame on Trump & more importantly shame on the Grand Old Republican Party that gave him the ticket and foisted him to power. The cradle of democracy that America claims to be, deserved better. What was even more shocking was the image of a Missouri Senator , Josh Hawley pumping his fist in the air, in a clear sign of encouragement and blatant abetment to the acts of plunder by the perpetrators of violence. In spite of all this, Donald Trump’s refusal to unequivocally condemn this naked assault on the citadel of democracy and his audacity to continue to not accept the election verdict in spite of the US Congress ratifying and validating Joe Biden’s election win is ludicrous. These are nothing but signs of a dangerous self-possessed man, bordering on lunacy, wielding despotic power, with his finger on the nuclear button. The US needs electoral reforms . It will do well by taking a leaf out of the Election book from other democracies like France & India to ensure transition of governments happen after an election efficiently and quickly, without any delay or fanning mindless speculation among the masses. The Biden-Harris administration must also work towards passing a law to ensure that the office of the US President doesn’t have absolute powers to over ride Congressional authority and also make necessary amends, so that in future, without curtailing Presidential powers, no occupant of the White House becomes dictatorial, to safeguard democracy and protect the US from slipping into an autocracy. In fact, what happened in the US must be an eye opener for democracies across the world.
A few administrative resignations ( voluntary or forced) are not enough to repair the damage, for what happened was unpardonable. Donald Trump must go and needs to be re-impeached for what transpired on Capitol Hill. It is time for the United States to decide whether an individual is bigger than the system or whether the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity, enshrined in the US Constitution by its founding fathers and which has been passed on over the years through successive governments are irrelevant today. If Trump thinks Joe Biden doesn’t deserve the respect of an outgoing US President on his inauguration day, given his pre-determined & announced absence, then Trump too doesn’t deserve to demit office naturally, but to be impeached and dismissed unceremoniously. The choice is in the hands of US lawmakers to rise above petty party politics and decide what message they wish to send to the world, as a befitting punishment for the arrogant and belligerent violence that was unleashed on Capitol Hill. It is time for the US to walk the talk and show that democratic principles are non-negotiable in the ‘land of the free’ and cannot be taken to ransom, ever. If Nancy Pelosi & team fail to act now, the US will forever lose it’s right to preach to others, elsewhere. What the US does in the next few days, in the run up to Biden’s inauguration will be keenly watched.

Mr President-reject :
Donald Trump :
Stop the Lies .Time to go
Blog 16
Kudos to Nancy Pelosi & team for showing grit & determination and sticking to her guns and getting Trump impeached. Unlike the last time, the Senate must overwhelmingly ratify and approve the Impeachment, when they meet, irrespective of whether it happens before or after the new President takes over. Donald Trump has misused the highest office of the land to further his political ambition, personal wealth and that of his family’s interests, notwithstanding the lies that he has been shamelessly mouthing on one occasion over the other. Whether it was the issue of constant denial on the virulence of the Corona virus and its rampant spread across the US, resulting in mindless deaths (some of which could have been avoided, had the President prevailed on the need to lock down early, imposed social distancing with mask adherence), his capitalist dismissive attitude on climate change, lies about a fairly modern Islamic society like Iran being a bigger threat to the civilized world than North Korea or the constant rants on him having won the election – these have all been nothing but lies. He came with a big promise of making America great again by fueling misplaced notions about immigrants stealing jobs from Americans, appealing to the hearts of white Americans , who saw in him a savior who will fix all that apparently wasn’t right. And what did he do – spent all his time and energy on angry rhetoric aimed at polarising a vulnerable society on racial lines and attempting to build a physical wall between US & Mexico to prevent the influx of illegal immigrants , pouring into the US. Seriously what world were his followers living in ? A nouveau Berlin wall in this century ! Storming of the Bastille in France was a history lesson that was the flashpoint of the French revolution. The attack on the Indian Parliament in 2001 was a terrorist act, which was condemned worldwide , with the Indian Government forces gunning down all the 5 terrorists on the Parliament lawn. So it’s anybody’s guess that what Trump was guilty of on that fateful day of Jan 6th was no small thing. Storming of the US Capitol by misguided American political zealots will go down the annals of time as a domestic uprising to overthrow a President-elect. Someone who exhorts his fellow country men to storm the seat of the government is nothing but a self possessed tyrant. There has been no precedence of this in the democratic world over the last few decades. This was nothing but a failed coup d’etat. Donald Trump may never admit his mistake but he will forever not be able to forgive himself for this historic blunder that he was party to. This one cruel joke has sounded the death knell to his political career. Donald Trump has been an ugly caricature of all that a world leader shouldn’t be, let alone be the President of the largest democracy on the planet.
The moot question is not whether there is any merit in , now impeaching a President who has completed his full term & is anyway on his way out, but the fact that a strong message needs to go out, that elected representatives cannot take power in their hands , misuse it and directly or indirectly be responsible for an armed insurrection. I don’t think the US Senate in its sane mind has a choice but to see to it that the impeachment comes a full circle and puts the last nail on the coffin ( unless of course it is determined to prove everyone wrong & exonerate the President-reject, Donald Trump ). Donald Trump shouldn’t be allowed to occupy any government position nor allowed to run for office again. While Joe Biden & Kamala Harris have their job cut out for the first 100 days, they need to see to it too that a repeat of this disgraceful event never happens ever. The US is the cradle of democracy and the Big daddy of the free world, around which nations rally ( unless of course, the US thinks that, that is a position it has long relegated to Communist China !). If there has been a fallout of sorts with the way democracy is run and administered and if its’ foundations are found to be on a sticky wicket, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris owe it to their fellow citizens, to move fast to contain the damage, stem the rot with firm measures and heal the festering wounds.

‘THE LINE’ : Saudi Arabia’s disruptive revolutionary living city-system.
Blog 17
On Jan 10th 2021, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince H.H Mohammad bin Salman made an announcement that made everyone sit up & notice. Cutting across Saudi Arabia’s lower one-third, at NEOM, in North Western Saudi Arabia, running linear from coast to coast would be a 170 km new city system, comprising of inter-connected communities, dubbed ‘THE LINE’. This is perhaps one of the biggest infrastructure announcements in the Middle East , after that of the iconic Burj Khalifa in Dubai, when it was first conceptualized. So what makes THE LINE unique ? How is it different from the plethora of ‘make believe’ fancy infrastructure projects that keep emerging like phoenixes in the desert sand of the oil rich Middle East ? Let us look at a few reasons why this is revolutionary & one of the biggest radical urban living concepts of our times :
1. Zero Carbon Project : THE LINE is going to be the first zero carbon emission urban infrastructure projects , after it has ‘gone live’ . The Project will endeavor to keep intact 95 % of its’ natural setting. This is truly unprecedented, especially when we are living in times when global warming & climate change are not just school essay topics. Sustainable living with minimal disruption to the environment in natural settings, without compromising on modern living & without the need to live like a hermit in the Himalayas or the Alps, is a Utopian concept that will soon become a reality for the residents of THE LINE. Apparently, the acronym LINE stands for ‘Living In Natural Environment’.
2. Renewable Energy Powered : Saudi Arabia & Non Renewable Energy powered urban city-scape. Now that’s an oxymoron , one would say. THE LINE will be 100 % powered by non renewable sources of energy and will be the first one of its kind in the world. It is indeed heartening to note that this is taking shape in the ‘Land of the Black Gold’. Saudi Arabia has certainly taken a leaf out of the United Arab Emirates’ urban planning Ministry and has finally realized that it needs to be future ready, when oil runs out. And it has indeed made a big splash with the announcement of THE LINE, to launch its tryst with a future life sans oil. No wonder, THE LINE runs through NEOM, which stands for ‘New Future’.
3. Zero Congestion : THE LINE is slated to be a place where everything will be available within 5 minutes of walk for the pedestrian. It will be ‘car-free’ & street free ( yes, you read that right) with no conventional mode of transport. So will there be a hyperloop or some other new generation mode of transport ? Wait & see. The creators of THE LINE promise to have a maximum commute time of 20 mins from one end of THE LINE to another. Now that’s a staggering time to have. Who wouldn’t love to be able to crisscross across the country in 20 mins ? Looks like the future of transport is here.
4. ‘Artificial Intelligence’ Powered multi layered subterranean infrastructure : THE LINE proposes to have multiple layers of infrastructure, with all layers, other than the pedestrian layer, below ‘terra firma’. Imagine all the hubbub of paraphernalia that powers and moves cities hidden away from plain sight and walking and living in a zero decibel environment. That is pure bliss, that probably our forefathers, since the invention of motorized vehicles and the industrial revolution, would have also not envisaged. If this is not path breaking, I do not know what else would be ?
5. Cosmopolitan Urban Living : THE LINE promises to raise the bar of modern city living by enveloping it in the lap of nature, with a plan to have more than a million residents from all over the world by 2030, when it is functional. Now this is one great feat for a conservative Islamic kingdom, which has always been shrouded in conservatism and muted modernity. Saudi Arabia will be setting the tone and benchmark for future cosmopolitan, multicultural, multi ethnic zones for those who truly are mobile internationally and whose skill sets are in demand internationally. Who knows this could be the beginning of a truly emancipated ‘passport-free’ future world, for the global traveler ?
6. Beginning of a race for symbiotic living ecosystems : There is no doubt that THE LINE will spur the race for more such sustainable ‘co-living with nature’ concepts across the world. This will be the precursor for an economy that is less dependent on oil and instead will be driven largely by domestic demand-supply compulsions, generating GDP and green dollars, which will offset the irregularly regular tug-of-war that the petro-dollar has vis-a-vis the price of a barrel of oil, which more often than not, plays truant and influences the world economy, overbearingly. If it is to be believed, as per the announcement by the Crown Prince, THE LINE will contribute approximately $ 48 billion to Saudi Arabia’s economy by 2030, a number that is a tad lower than the 2020 GDP of the gambling city state of Macao.
Move over Dubai, a new bar has been set and THE LINE is the new ‘name of the game’.

“Power Corrupts and Absolute
Power Corrupts Absolutely”
Blog 18
John Dalberg-Acton’s famous remark, made in the 1800’s reverberates louder than ever when one reads the newspaper these days. On Feb 1st 2021, the world woke up to the second major international political upheaval of the year, this time in Myanmar or erstwhile Burma ( the first of course being the quadrennial change of guard at the White House, with the unseating of Donald Trump & the Joe Biden takeover) , when the military deposed a democratically elected government and usurped power in Yangon. As much as the world watched in shock & dismay, there was a muted resignation to the regime change in Myanmar by the world polity of nations. Was that because the military never really ceded full control to a Nationalist elected government fully and the so called ‘ elected offices’ of the land were mere tokenisms, permitted thanks to the years of ‘Nobel Peace prize winning’ tireless campaign of crusaders of Burmese democracy, led by Aung San Suu Kyi? Beats me, why the post held by her was called ‘State Counsellor’ ? Barring lip service by world leaders & condemnation, the world has chosen by far , to watch in stoic silence as the Burmese military took over absolute control of the government in Myanmar. The fact that it was a bloodless coup without an iota of violence when the dictatorship usurped power, speaks volumes about how facile it was for them in a land where every institution is deeply entrenched with the military & all the military administration had to do was merely lunge in the bayonet when the moment was rife, in their time of choosing. And all this, in a country that gave the modern world a UN Secretary General in the form of U Thant. What a shame !
Recently in Uganda, where the incumbent President Museveni has been in power since 1986 and fought an election, that was riddled with controversies of muffling opposition rivals , the world was witness to internet shutdowns to mute dissenting voices & widespread manipulation. In Belarus last year, President Alexander Lukashenko who has been ruling the country for the last 26 years with an iron grip, came back to power, amidst complaints of lack of poll observers & scrutiny. The violence that followed the election results caught international media attention. And also fresh on our minds is the rampage at the The Capitol Hill, by Trump loyalists, in a last ditch frustrating attempt, to thwart efforts by the US Congress to ratify the Joe Biden Presidential win. Make no mistake, this was a cleverly disguised failed coup attempt with Presidential sanction in the ‘land of the free’ and what ensued will now go down the annals of US history. In several countries, governments that are voted to power with absolute majority are assuming upon themselves the mantle of ‘saviors of the nation’ and crushing all forms of dissent and increasingly becoming intolerant to disagreement. Is there a pattern emerging that is worrisome ?
In fact the age old democratic practice to ‘agree to disagree amicably’ is shockingly but un-admittedly, no longer agreeable with many governments. It is important that elected representatives are curbed of certain power that can make them totalitarian. In all the aforesaid examples above, the incumbent ruler wielded unbridled power. This needs to be pruned and distributed if not equitably, but rationally among other centres of power within the ruling dispensation, for semblance of balance and democratic rule of law. Absolute power must never roll up to one single individual ever, as it corrupts the person absolutely, in the long run and is a dangerous invitation to the ruler and his coterie , for subverting democracy. The individual must never be allowed to become larger than the system and assume that he or she is indispensable. Since the emergence of democracy, several nations have adopted it in varying forms, sizes and shapes. However, irrespective of the type of democracy being practised, it is high time governments make amends or changes to their constitution to ensure that there is no single power centre, around which the government unequivocally revolves. Secondly, no elected government must be allowed to be in power for more than 4-5 years, following which a re-election must happen, under a constitutionally created independent Electoral body. This will bring in free and fair elections to a great extent. The Ancient Greeks when they thought of ‘rule by the people’ and gave birth to the world’s first democratic government , couldn’t have possibly ‘thought it all’ and it is now up to us to further polish, embellish and hone it further. And we need to do this as we owe this to our future generations.

Need for Speed :
Universalizing Targeted Drug
Design & Vaccine Research-
the COVID 19 way.
Blog 19
In a span of 1 year of the COVID 19 virus making its appearance in Wuhan, China and becoming one of the biggest full blown pandemics in recent public memory, destroying lives & livelihood across the world, COVID 19 vaccines have hit the market and this is no mean feat. This is a testament of how man’s sheer will, determination and concerted efforts can can actually fast track the development of critical vaccines and life saving drugs. COVID 19 vaccine development has been an unprecedented race like no other, with pharmaceutical companies, government alliances and non profit organizations, all punching above their weight, together to save mankind, more out of fear than anything else, throwing profit out at the wind ( or was it a small sacrifice for a larger gain?) . The COVID 19 pandemic was the Third World War, the world never saw. More people across the world spanning almost all countries have died so far, than there were casualties ever, in the Second World War, involving only a handful of nations. As I write this, more than a dozen countries have started vaccinating their populations, what with half a dozen vaccine candidates cleared for public use already, by different governments worldwide. Vaccine & Drug development normally takes about a decade, if not more, because of the long drawn meticulous research process and phased trials involved, before it is launched. Does this mean that the COVID 19 vaccine roll out was a rushed affair, with adequate protocols not followed before it was readied for human use ? Probably not. On the contrary, what COVID 19 did was to ensure that the virus genome sequencing, vaccine research time and knowledge sharing by researchers in different labs across the globe and the varied phases of trials were simply accelerated to come out with a final product that was ready to be marketed and used. All this wouldn’t have happened without inter-governmental backing and support.
For centuries now, the world has been battling illnesses like Malaria, Leishmaniasis, Leprosy, AIDS, Cancer etc in varying proportions across different geographical distributions, majority of which ‘plague’ ( pun intended) the developing & the tropical world and do not get the attention they deserve from pharmacological companies because of the sheer difficulty in developing a vaccine/ remedial cure against these, the thousands of man hours required for research and the consequent billions of dollars that would need to be drained, with no guaranteed success. Imagine what would happen if there is a concerted government backed consortium of pharmaceutical companies who would come together, backed by inter-governmental funding to develop vaccines & drugs that would eradicate these conventional illnesses from the face of the planet. We need to do this as we have newer bugs to worry about, who are smarter, require intensive research and study coupled with genomic sequencing for targeted drug design and delivery within the human body so that they do not evade the human immune system and at the same time do not cause collateral damage to other healthy systems of the body. If we are still going to be caught up in our little cubby holes in our respective labs in our respective countries, attempting to find our own little breakthroughs, waiting for our ‘eureka’ moments with the old bugs, even before we know it , we would be washed away by a deluge of new generation , relatively unknown pathogens, who will not only be responsible for mass biological extermination but also leave in it’s wake destroyed societies, fractured economies and push the world behind by a few decades, if not hundred years. Human kind has already seen several emerging zoonotic diseases over the last few decades caused by organisms that have jumped species from the animal world to ours, be it Simian AIDS, Kyasanur Forest Disease ( KFD)/ Monkey Fever, Japanese Bee Encephalitis, West Nile Virus, Ebola, SARS, Bird Flu, Swine Flu,among several others & now the killer buzz word of our times : Corona Virus. We have already seen what Corona did to the world. 2020 was an aberration like Donald Trump that people don’t want to remember and wished never happened. And trust me, the SARS CoV-2 virus will not be the last. Much in our natural world , in our oceans, rain forests & wilderness lie unexplored, warranting detailed study. Therefore it wasn’t surprising when news trickled in today that a ‘Superbug’ called Candida auris, which is dreaded as a deadly hospital pathogen known to cause iatrogenic illness in immunologically compromised patients has been isolated from the natural environment for the first time in India from the pristine sandy beaches of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. This species of fungi is notoriously capable of causing mass scale infection, consequent sepsis & death in patients – an all too familiar pattern that everyone living today, now associates with a pandemic. Perpetual lock downs where we are all ‘locked in’ , in our limited attempts to beat bugs may not be the smartest thing and the last experience that anyone would want. Dreams of colonizing Mars or the moon are good but the rallying cry of our times has to be ‘all hands on the deck’ for novel vaccine and drug development, if we need to save mankind for posterity.

Post COVID World : Projected Travel Trends & Patterns
Blog 20
The COVID 19 virus transmission and infection rates seem to be waxing and waning and it’s refusal to be subjugated by the vaccination drives across the globe is not lost on anyone. Unfortunately, it has already mutated and there are now 2 established new strains of the SARS CoV-2 virus: the UK & the South African strains respectively, both of which emerged after the existing set of vaccines being developed had either entered their Phase 2 or 3 trials or were on the assembly line, being rolled out in batches in production for mass distribution and inoculation. The virus is clearly giving a fight back and relentlessly refusing to be wiped out. Only to make things worse, there has been a sudden spike in the emergence of new cases in US, Brazil , Germany, the Indian states of Maharashtra, Delhi & Tamil Nadu and a few other countries, worldwide. The virus is sadly in no tearing hurry to say goodbye. When can we have our normal lives back ? When can we move about, with abandon as we socialize and enjoy a good time with family and friends ? When can we stop living in constant fear of contracting an infection from an interaction with a total stranger ? Well, your guess is as good as mine. Probably not anytime soon nor in the near future. The old normal is no longer the new normal. There are societies who are already horrified at the thought of going into fresh lock downs. So does this mean we continue to wallow in the quagmire of poor economic growth , lost jobs, stunted growth opportunities for companies and individuals alike ? Not quite, if we don’t want to.
One oft overlooked aspect is the fact that economic growth & prosperity can actually be indexed to travel and tourism. When a company grows, it hires generalists to do the same kind of job in multiple locations, who are required to travel to the client or company branch location. And once it’s plate of generalists are full, who dish out uniform prototype ‘goods or service’ attributable to the company, it needs to hire specialists across several other verticals like Financial Analysis, Taxation, Budgeting, Market Research, Marketing, Advertising, Human Resources, Management etc, who will again need to travel to understand the scope and scale of operations of the company across its varied operations and geographies and do their jobs better. And as the company grows even further, there is this burgeoning class of generalists who sometimes masquerade as specialists – ‘sales personnel’. They need to travel to not only build that emotional and psychological connect with distributors, dealers and the end buyer/user of the company’s goods/services, but also to benchmark and promote their merchandise over their competitor’s. And this cycle further propels the company ahead on the trajectory of growth . Now enters COVID -19. Travel pauses, mutes and eventually peters out. Some companies wither away while a few others prune, cut flab, get ship shape and survive. Those who manage to survive have embraced a virtual environment, where the future growth of the company is solely dependent on the actions the team does virtually. A few manage to deliver like before while for a vast majority of others, the sum total of the cumulative efforts of the company are nothing but ‘sub-optimal results’. These ‘sub-optimal result’ ones are the lot , who can’t wait for travel to resume. And these companies cannot wait for that last COVID virion to be stamped out and then only start making travel plans. For if they wait any longer, it will only prove disastrous for their existence. And then there are several sets of individuals who have been forced to be away from their loved ones for far too long : fathers who have not seen their new borns yet; grandparents who are dying to cradle their grand children in their arms before they kick the bucket as the sunset years seem to be zoning in fast; students who worked hard for years to bag that coveted seat in that Ivy league college or institution, only to be told that they will have to wait it out a tad longer before they can join campus ‘in person’ and newly weds who wanted to start their life’s journey together, first by making that honeymoon trip to that exotic dream destination, but had to indefinitely defer their plans. Then there are a few others, still languishing in pain, suffering from co-morbidities whose elective surgeries had to be ‘put on hold’ out of fear of contracting COVID-19, in a hospital setting. The list of people from different walks of life who have been impacted by the virus is endless and they are all waiting for redemption & succour.
Travel needs to start sooner than later, albeit in a safe manner. We simply cannot have a situation where aeroplanes making an entry into & exit out of a country respectively spread the virus further and inflict greater damage than good. I strongly feel that a few trends and patterns will emerge slowly and steadily, but surely. These are as given below :
- Vaccination Status on Passports : Every country however small or big will want to be reasonably assured that the individuals passing through their airport, land and sea customs are immunized against COVID 19 and will not cause any further damage to the health and well being of it’s citizens. The way passports look will plausibly change, with individual vaccination statuses getting captured, to start with for COVID-19 and who knows eventually for illnesses and infections that are notified by WHO like Yellow Fever, Polio, Small Pox, SARS and others who can potentially infect populations in epidemic proportions like Ebola, SARS, Influenzae, Plague, Cholera etc. This is the future and countries need to slowly make that transition as a safe check.
- Preference for Countries where majority of the population have been vaccinated:This is common sense. Frequent travelers and those who travel on leisure with family will change gears to prefer countries who are proportionately better mass immunized against COVID-19.
- Preference for less crowded, lesser known ‘out of the box’ destinations: Need I say more ?
- Year of the Solo Traveler: Armed with masks and sanitizers, leisure travel will see more solo travelers opting to ‘go-it-alone’, in order not to jeopardize the health and lives of people they love, and hence will bite the travel bullet alone, to satiate that urge to step out and do something different from the mundane existence of ‘work from home’. This will become a trend and slowly catch on.
- Cheaper fares for “Full Occupancy Rows” on an Airline: Airlines who pack their seats to capacity , to ring in the cash registers up to the last dime, will have to settle for either internal re-designing of aircraft cabins or come to terms with the fact that the middle seat will be filled only as an exception. Just as the non retracting emergency seats with extra leg room command a premium in short haul flights, airlines will start selling ” Full Occupancy Row ” seats at a discount.
- Traveler Obsession with ‘Low Cost Flights’ will be replaced by ‘ Shorter Flight Time’ : Passengers will no longer be enamored by ‘low cost carriers’ at rock bottom fares, who take them half way across the world to get them from Point A to Point B with multiple flight changes, stop overs & airport lounges. People will prefer shorter flights with as much little time spent in layovers in an airport.
- No Frills/ Contact-less travel: Airports and airlines will need to gear up for face less and contact less travel with as little human interface as possible. This may be a daunting task for Security agencies manning airports and aircrafts, but then this is the future.
As we all wait for travel to pick steam in the coming days, the key under writer in the equation is how rapidly and what proportion of the population is vaccinated first, by governments worldwide. That will be critical. Let’s see.

Second or Third COVID Wave : Time for Personal Lock downs – Each one reach one !
Blog 21
World over, people have been hit by a resurgence of COVID cases, touted as second or third waves ( as the case may be) in different countries. A belligerent virus is giving a fight back to the global vaccine syndicate’s efforts to crush the rising case curve. There is an implicit resistance and hesitation by governments to call for a lockdown. This is partly because of the fear of the damage it can cause to an already ailing economy, handicapped by sluggish sales and industrial growth, thanks to the pandemic. There is also a reluctance to call for a lockdown, as it exposes the ruling dispensation’s vulnerability and helplessness, in the context of the pandemic. Any call for another lockdown will run counter to the image of resilience and strength that each government has cultivated with such difficulty over the last 1 year, since the outbreak of the pandemic. Post the launch of the vaccination drives across the world, multiple governments have attempted to put up a brave face and present a picture of stoicism and composure, in a demonstrative bid to show that things are finally now coming under control and hence the trepidation over imposition of a lockdown as it will expose the chinks in their armour. To be fair to their efforts, I think governments worldwide are honestly trying, albeit in varying degrees to thwart the pandemic in it’s throes. How successful all these measures will be , only time will tell. Some will do a better job than the others, while some others will learn it late, that certain things could have been done a better way. As we speak, no one knows the sure fire way to stamp out the pandemic completely. We are all learning from each other and constantly fine tuning our response strategies. Is there anything else that is missing amidst the plethora of “do’s & don’ts” that flood all our screens at home, be it TV, computer, tablets, mobile phones etc.
I think it’s time for ‘each one to reach one’ and spread the message for the need for a personal lockdown. Employees, students and workers across all grades, globally need to take a week’s ‘time -off’ and lock themselves in, especially in cities & regions of countries that are facing the maximum brunt of the new waves of the pandemic. Total Voluntary Isolation ( TV -I) for a week can be practised in a staggered manner by business units within a company, families, apartment complexes, residential blocks, units and zones within a city or region. This will definitely slow the community spread of the virus, giving much needed respite to the already stressed hospital sector. It will allow hospitals time to factor for extra ICU & CCU beds, work on replenishing supplies of the fast dwindling medical oxygen reserves and life saving cardiac care and Anti viral drugs ( Remdesivir etc). Expecting the government to do a total lockdown will not be prudent. A total shutdown is not the answer and will only cripple economies and push them to the brink of disaster. Businesses, organizations and citizen groups can form COVID Task Forces that must implement staggered personal lockdowns and help strengthen their governments’ resolve to fight the virus. During this downtime, governments can also train their time, energy and resources towards scaling up health and logistics infrastructure, driving digitization, improving the social security net of their citizens, ramping up manufacture of anti virals and critical care drugs, oxygen cylinders, PPE kits, vaccine stocks etc. A partial lockdown of personal volition will help give a fillip to the health sector to recover, recuperate and heal itself. A healthy workforce is a more productive work force and augurs well for the economy. Developing & Third World countries have a golden opportunity to pass and implement radical laws on civic hygiene, social distancing in public transport, sanitation, garbage disposal and cleanliness in public and open spaces. This is an opportunity of a lifetime that governments, irrespective of their ideological affiliation and agenda, must not miss, in order to be future ready. If they do, they will go down in the annals of time as the people at the helm of affairs responsible for taking their country half a century back, when disaster struck.

Post Pandemic World : A New Normal & Way of Life awaits.
Blog 22
Much water has flown down all the rivers on the planet combined and the virus has been playing truant world over, with case loads waxing and waning in several countries, amidst the race to vaccinate as many people as possible across relevant age groups. The US is slowing bracing to open up with signs of confidence sprouting across various sectors. Of course, the first sign that things have slowly but surely started to return back to normal was when in the last week of May this year, President Joe Biden, the Veep & their staff threw away their masks , endorsing that it was ok to do so, when in the company of people who are already vaccinated, in conjunction with the advisory issued by CDC. And this was a big thing since it came from an incumbent US president who advocated mass masking up when he took over the reins, in stark contrast to his predecessor who had reluctantly espoused the usage of masks, after being brow beaten to it, by a belligerent American public, who had lost many a precious life to the virus. Scarcely can one forget the lax and whimsical non-scientific approach towards the pandemic by Donald Trump, in the first quarter of 2020, which cost everyone dear.
What next ? Does this mean that the US is not overly worried about the next wave ? Probably yes. Does this confidence stem from the fact that the Biden administration’s $ 1.9 trillion COVID relief plan has not only been set in motion when it was passed into law but has already started to bear fruits ? In his own words, before he signed off the plan, Biden said that ‘this relief plan is about rebuilding the backbone of this country’. True it. It aimed to address 3 fundamental areas where the pandemic hit the average American the most : (i) Unemployment Insurance Supplement & Direct Benefit Transfer (ii) Funds for the Vaccine program & distribution (iii) Child Tax Credit. I am told that people started getting the benefit of the Unemployment relief as soon as the law came into effect. And vaccine distribution was ramped up like never before. World over, what the US Govt did was replicated in some form, size & shape by several other governments. In the next few months to a year, I see the following changes coming to pass :
- Herd Immunity & Emergence of COVID Anti-virals : Except for the vaccine naysayers & the fence sitters, today the US is in a position where more than 60 % of its adult population have at least taken a single jab and the shot available for all who register for it. Sooner than later they will see the emergence of herd immunity & a fall in case positivity rates too. And a concomitant impact on other countries as well as inbound and outbound travel from the US happens to these countries. Also other major developed and developing nations will also have mass vaccinated a sizeable chunk of their adult population, by then. This will undoubtedly bring in the much needed respite for the health sector and frontline workers who were under tremendous duress to perform their duties under the shadow of the virus and at the same time were wary of imperiling their lives as they go about attending to the call of duty. And with all the noise & din surrounding Case Fatality Rates (CFR) going down, attention will shift towards developing Anti-virals that will effectively treat the infection. Presently, thanks to a better understanding of the pathogenesis of the disease, it’s a cocktail therapy that is being followed as COVID treatment protocol across different countries, with heavy reliance on symptomatic correction of falling Oxygen saturation levels, use of blood thinners to thwart any blood clot formation and risk of a cardiac arrest, use of unconventional anti parasitic drugs like Ivermectin, non specific anti virals like Remdesivir, Tocilizumab, adjunct therapy with Antibiotics, Zinc, Vit C, D3, other multivitamins and steroid therapy in advanced and refractory cases of the disease etc. The objective clearly is to stop the illness from progressing during it’s course and save the individual , no matter what needs to be given. There is no single drug of choice identified yet that can be billed as a definitive COVID Anti-viral. Slowly as majority of the world population gets vaccinated, attention must shift towards targeted drug design and delivery systems that will effectively cure COVID by attacking the virus at a cellular level. I think pharma companies will focus on this and before the end of the year, we will have such a drug in trial phase at least.
- Emergence of new Work Paradigms like the Hybrid Model of Working : A lot of companies will adopt a safe approach and continue to push for employees to work from home , while at the same time ensure that physical visits to the office also happen, albeit restricted to a few days of of the week only. Measuring employee productivity from home will become the new thing. Since it may be counter intuitive and stressful for any employee to have a ‘Big Brother’ watching over their shoulder while at work from home, companies will hence embrace Artificial Intelligence technologies and new software tools that will evolve further to record billable hours, monitor, measure and assess employee attendance and productivity of remote work, without breaching individual privacy at home. Companies have come to discover and realize during the pandemic that employees working from the comfort of their home turfs tend to deliver more and better. So why not adopt a balanced hybrid approach where they continue to work from home, even after the pandemic and at the same time visit offices for that mandatory face time with other colleagues and office socializing, twice a week ?
- Disruption & Innovation : Every crisis that the world has seen has always spurred innovation and lateral thinking. Relief package or no package, as people attempt to put the pieces of their lives back together, they will discover novel opportunities. They say ‘Necessity is the mother of Invention‘. There are many whose livelihoods have been adversely impacted because of job losses due to the pandemic. Some of them will never be able to get back to what they were doing and will either branch out to do their own thing and will end up being either mediocre ‘also ran’ businesses or create something new and innovative, which they never would have , had there been no pandemic. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next 1 year sees the emergence of new start ups in technologies that the world didn’t see before. Some of these would invariably involve last mile door step delivery of goods and services, to cater to the new disjointed consumer working, playing, praying and shopping from home.
- Vaccination Passports and Touch Free Systems : I have written about this earlier as well and I do believe that irrespective of how the very idea of health profiling and issuing a vaccination passport can be perceived as infringing on one’s personal freedom and rights, this is an unavoidable reality in the new world that has already come. Imagine the amount of comfort that border patrol & immigration control would get when they know that every individual passport being stamped and allowed in and out of the gates, represents an individual who has been thoroughly vaccinated against notifiable illnesses and dangerous infections and presents no known threat to the citizens of a country they are visiting. Another major technology that will become a norm will be ‘touch-free’ systems, be it access doors, water dispensers, vending machines at subway train stations, airports, touch free public transport, lifts, parking lots, touch free shopping mall experiences etc. It will be interesting to see how this technology evolves, if it will be a combination of thermal sensing, retinal imaging, voice command or something else. What we saw majorly so far in Sci-Fi movies & augmented reality will get fast forwarded and we will see them being used more , around us in our day-to-day lives, sooner than later.
- Greater Governmental Spending on Health Sector : Governments across the world have learnt one thing from the COVID-19 pandemic – that health is a priority sector which can have massive ramifications on all other sectors of the economy and could potentially derail any progress and development already made and decimate productive work force to take a country backward by decades. Traditionally, plum portion of all budgetary allocation would tend to go to the Defence and other sectors which most governments find politically convenient to cater to, to showcase a nationalist outlook, in order to pander to their electorate. This is not going to change – they will continue to allocate and put money where their vote is. However what will additionally happen is there will be a huge impetus to ensure that the health infrastructure, drug research and medical education in a country is shored up. There is that sinking feeling that everyone has, that in all likelihood , COVID-19 was not the last pandemic that we have seen. It is merely the first among others, who may follow ! Whether it was manufactured in a lab or a freak act of nature that unleashed havoc on mankind will continue to be debated, till the cows come home. The moot point is – we better be ready and prepared for what will come next, for it will come. And if it happens on someone’s watch, who was in command when COVID happened and we are caught unprepared, then that ruling dispensation will only have themselves to blame for having completely destroyed themselves politically.

Little Drops of Water make the Mighty Ocean !
Blog 23
Keep Calm and go on ! Try telling that to the children who lost their mother to COVID or the hapless teenager who was dreaming of getting into college and now lost her dad to the illness, who was the only bread winner for the household or that company executive who unexpectedly lost his job because of the pandemic ? Have you thought what goes through the minds of thousands of delivery boys and girls as they crisscross across the roads, travel the last mile, at times to ensure essential supplies are delivered to our doorsteps, within the stipulated time, almost always without fail or those COVID Critical Care Unit doctors and nurses , who tend to the sick and the infirm, knowing not if they will make it out alive and healthy, for their own families? Spare a thought for them and their kith and kin. We may not be able to take their place and shoulder their responsibilities nor can we always be in a position to help wherever we can, monetarily. While physically we may not be able to do much for them , we all can in our own little ways make a huge difference in the lives of the aforesaid COVID warriors and champions who we know or come across. Let’s try and enumerate the small things that what we can do & remember to spread cheer and alleviate mental agony , stress & pain that is almost always covered well, under the face mask that they all now wear.
1.Tip your online delivery personnel, as a rule of thumb : These individuals run from morning to evening, from one end of the city to another, come rain, come shine, striving to make that ‘on time delivery’. Some of them are students, doing a part time jig to raise funds for their education while there are others who are the sole income earners for their families. Of course they are masked and thermally screened before they pick and drop, but imagine the number of contacts that they are forced to make in this entire logistical chain, during the day. They not only risk their lives but also jeopardize the lives of their loved ones they go back home to. A small word of thank you and a friendly tip will not make them millionaires nor relegate you to poverty, but that small act of kindness and appreciation will go a long way in motivating them to work harder and better for the people they serve.
2. Respect your Doctor & the medical staff: God forbid that you have to visit a hospital for your own self, your loved ones or your pets, during these pandemic times. But if you have to, please show restraint, respect the ‘out of pattern’ hospital rules in the wake of the pandemic and do not for a minute assume that you know better ( because Google gave you other health suggestions for treatment !) and that medical staff didn’t do as much as they ought to have for your loved ones . If only Google was enough to make doctors, engineers, nurses, architects, teachers and managers, what a world it would have been. We wouldn’t need schools, colleges and universities. So Stop being a Google doctor ! Trust your doctor in the hospital. Remember they have gone through years of rigorous study and have been trained to do this in a medical school before they graduate out. Do not resort to physical or verbal abuse, arson, damage to hospital equipment or harassment, if a health outcome doesn’t go your way. Doctors, nurses and hospital staff are merely doing their job and cannot be faulted and/or blamed if the health condition of anyone deteriorates, beyond repair, in spite of best medical efforts. Remember they are not God. Like any other professional, they are always attempting at doing their best in spite of all constraints and in all that they do, fatigue, error in judgement due to long hours of work etc can also be a crucial factor, but that is more an exception than a norm. They are entitled to the respect and understanding they deserve like in any other profession.
3. Remember your friendly neighbourhood stores : Thanks to the lockdowns and the incessant surge in online deliveries, these are the guys who have been hit the most. Once the staggered lockdowns are lifted and the spread of the virus abates, buy from them. Insist on home delivery, if you need to. Support small businesses wherever you can. These are the lifeblood of any economy. Large multi-format stores will manage to not only thrive but also do well. They don’t need your patronage, your friendly neighbourhood store owner does. Spend more and haggle less with small businesses.
4. Be understanding towards Children, show kindness and help a needy child, you don’t know ,somewhere : Need I say more ? It’s a very different world out there now. There are children who have not seen what a physical school looks like after the pandemic stuck ( kids who ideally should be in 2nd grade of school now, had there been no pandemic). We don’t know how these kids will turn out to be, given the deprivation of social learning in a physical classroom setting during the foundational years. Be empathetic to their needs and be understanding. Don’t shoo them away if they come barging into the room, while you are in an office meeting. it’s alright for them to peek into the laptop camera or howl in the background. And then there are those kids who for no fault of theirs have been rendered orphans or whose parents have lost their jobs because of the pandemic and their whole world has been hit. If you get to hear of someone like that or know a child like that, volunteer to do something to make a little difference in their lives. Remember kindness makes the world go round. And what goes around will definitely come around, to you in whichever way you render it.

‘You are welcome to my country but your COVID Vaccine, hell NO !’……Sorry what ??
The world is racing towards vaccinating maximum number of people as possible, against an infectious disease in the shortest span of time ever, in the history of mankind. As I write this, as per an article recently published in The New York Times, roughly about 45.9 % of the world population have received at least a single dose of the COVID 19 vaccine. That’s an impressive number by any standards. Some of the top most populated countries in the world like India, Indonesia, China, Bangladesh, US, Brazil, Russia, Nigeria & Mexico etc can collectively lift this number and help thwart the spread of this infection further, if they successfully step up vaccine production and/or procurement, as the case may be and see through their respective vaccination drives. Now we all know that vaccines being used in different countries are not by the same maker nor of the same make. Each of the vaccines in use today go through at least 4-5 stages ranging from a Pre-Clinical Stage ( candidate Vaccine) to Clinical stage ( Vaccine development stage) to Approval phase ( Regulatory Submission) to Production Phase ( Final approval for Marketing & Mass production). The respective governments in different countries have chosen to recognize and approve different vaccines, basis what their scientific intelligentsia have recommended and a myriad other factors like ease of procurement, cold chain logistics, price point ( may be) etc. How poor could those vaccine choice decisions have been ? The only way to find out if one vaccine is better than the other is through detailed studies over a span of time. Do we have enough data over a considerable period of time to survey and study this ? The answer is No. While lab tests from time to time over the last one year ,have alluded to one vaccine scoring better than the other when it comes to tackling mutant variants of the SARS CoV-2 virus, they are all effective in ensuring that the immunized individual is adequately protected and the human body armed with antibodies to stave off any infection. Some may produce more antibodies than the other. This could either be due to vaccine specific or idiopathic individual immunological reasons. But then isn’t that the case with all known vaccines ? There are scores of times when a vaccine failure happens due to one or more of the various reasons enlisted below :
- Break in Cold Storage & the Cold Chain while in transport till end use, rendering the vaccine in-efficacious.
- Incorrect vaccine administration and consequent vaccine wastage leading to poor immune response to the vaccine.
- Fraudulent Administration of some other medicine/distilled water in the garb of a vaccine.
- Inadvertent administration of an expired vaccine.
- Individual Idiopathic Varying Response to a Vaccine.
- Adverse Effects Following Immunization ( AEFI) , which is again idiopathic and individual specific.
So if there is no concrete reason for generically dubbing a vaccine better than another, why should governments adopt a ‘vaccine untouchability’ stance, not recognizing some, citing whimsical logic. An individual , if he/she is immunized against Chicken Pox, MMR or Hepatitis, do the immigration officials at the port of entry , check the vaccine type or make. A simple Vaccinated -yes status is good enough to see the individual through the gates, without any quarantine. Then why should certain countries adopt double standards when it comes to COVID-19 vaccines ? An argument could be made that the aforesaid diseases are not as contagious, endemic in nature and as virulent with a high morbidity rate as COVID and hence the need to exercise an abundance of caution. Fair point from a technicality perspective, but nonetheless the whole idea of checking if an individual is immunized at a check point or portal of entry to a country, is to gain a first level assurance that they will not bring in any disease from the ports of egress in their respective countries, from where they have embarked. Once vaccinated, the matter ends there. No one actually can cross evaluate nor possess the bandwidth to do a spot assessment of the efficacy of the vaccine that was administered. Else at every port of entry, one must insist on an Antibody titre test, which may not be instantaneous and will only slow down immigration queue movement. An Antibody titre test will be ‘vaccine-type & make ‘ agnostic and hence rule out allegations of any bias against any country’s vaccine. There was a recent development where a lot of hue and cry was made when an India origin Covid vaccine – Covishield ( which is an Astra Zeneca vaccine replica, that is recognized in the UK) was refused to be recognized by the UK Border Agency as India is still in their Amber list of countries whose nationals require mandatory quarantine, upon arrival in UK, in spite of having been immunized with Covishield. This entire controversy could have been avoided. If an individual is vaccinated and carries a passport with his vaccinated status clearly declared by his respective government, then on arrival at any port, entry should not be denied, irrespective of the type and make of the vaccine nor should the person be subjected to mandatory quarantine for a period equivalent to that of an un-vaccinated individual. If in spite of vaccination , border control desires to mandate quarantine for an agreed period, it must be vaccine type & make agnostic. It’s a matter of trust and comity between nations and their passport control offices. Instead of focusing time and wasting energies on fighting to recognize each other’s vaccines, all resources and attention must be single mindedly deployed on ensuring the remaining eligible men, women and others comprising 64.1 % of the un-vaccinated world population is quickly given a jab against this scourge called COVID-19.

Like the Seasonal Flu, learn to live with COVID but no lowering of guard . Mandate the vaccine !
Blog 25
As the sun dawned on 2022, with the surge in Omicron finally putting governments on full alert mode, it couldn’t have been more an unhappy start than this. There seems to be no end to the scourge that COVID-19 has become. The virus seems to be adamant in not giving up, with some countries experiencing a fourth and even a fifth wave of the pandemic. The rising cases of the new variant of COVID-19 is testing our limits and bringing back scary memories of the earlier waves when people gasped for their breaths, battling hospital short supplies, clamoring for timely medical attention for themselves & their loved ones. Fortunately for us, the new Omicron variant appears to be a milder one with fewer hospitalization and deaths, in spite of it’s high virulence and transmissibility. Honestly viruses tend to mutate and this may not be the last one that we have seen. It is time to live with the virus like the scores of viruses that plague life on earth, albeit with absolute human dominance and mitigable control over it’s pathogenesis and the sequalae of events following an infection. There are several people across societies, who are averse to the idea of being masked all the time & care two hoots about regular hand washing, sanitizing and social distancing, in spite of being policed, fined and chastised to comply with COVID appropriate behavior. How do we deal with such COV’IDIOTS’ ? Mandate the vaccine. It is time vaccination is ramped up so that no individual in the civilized world is left without having received a jab. It is easier said than done, given the plethora of vaccine naysayers, doomsday predictors and the religious bigots who fuel their irrational notions, propagating unscientific theories on the harmful effects on the human body because of vaccine usage. They have always been around and will continue to be vocal critics, with voices of dissent , defying all logic & reason, in the garb of personal choice & freedom. They must not be allowed to corrupt mainstream society with their shenanigans and a vaccine mandate must come in for the following reasons :
1. Life must go on for the vast majority who comply to every bit of COVID guideline and direction rolled out by the authorities from time to time. Enough is enough. Other lives cannot be imperiled because of the whims and fancies of a handful few others, who think it’s not cool to mask up or get vaccinated. If they wish to avail social benefits and enjoy unfettered access to common rights and privileges like the others, then they need to act responsibly and in the interest of building a herd immunity, get jabbed. They simply cannot only expect rights and benefits and not be willing to cooperate and contribute. Kudos to the Australians for putting their foot down and refusing visa to a top tennis player for non compliance to Australian immigration requirements, during the recent Australian Open.
2. Restoration and healing can only happen, if we can put the pandemic behind us. There are individuals and families who have lost their loved ones and have been unable to visit the bereaved or give a proper farewell to the ones who have been lost to the pandemic forever. They are seeking closure and that only happen if the society is fully open and they can get along with completing all that is pending to put the past behind them emphatically and move on.
3. The Battered Economy needs a life saver. The fall out of the pandemic across the globe has been how several traditional businesses, retail stores and other establishments have taken a hit and seen a slump in sales. Consequently many downed their shutters , laying off several individuals, some of who are still searching for jobs, commensurate to their years of work experience, abilities and qualification. The economy will only come back a full circle on full revival mode, once the frequent disruptions in the form of lockdowns and restrictions in economic activity are reasonably eased, if not lifted altogether. That can only happen if the ongoing confidence building measures taken by respective governments to provide COVID relief and succour to the masses bears fruit and reaches the end beneficiary sooner than later. And for that to happen, all the cogs in the wheels of the economy- commercial activity, supply chain distribution systems, government machinery, rise in purchasing power and consequent demand and social delivery systems etc need to function seamlessly, in a well oiled fashion, without any creak.
4. Impending repair of Psychological damage caused to children : One class of citizens who have not been given the due importance that they should have got, but have been relegated to being second class citizens and always taken for granted are children. Ever since the pandemic broke out, children are the ones who have truly lost their freedom and have been confined to homes, finding solace in online games, friendship and virtual connects, with the occasional visit to the neighbourhood park or playground thrown in. The joys of childhood, the reckless abandon with which they could hang out and play with each other, their confidence levels of handling situations at home and outside on their own have taken a beating and their emotions have all been sub-consciously brushed with a stroke of caution and fear. There is no adequate measure of how much they have deteriorated in their social abilities and have been left scarred emotionally and psychologically, over the last 2 years. If left unattended, this can undoubtedly spawn a generation of children who will not only lack adequate social abilities but end up being a set of machine loving heartless beings who would prefer to try to find solace and comfort with a machine or a gadget over another fellow human being. Children and young adults have been the most vulnerable category and the new Omicron strain has further exposed their vulnerability, given the spate of infections among children and the young unvaccinated.
5. The marginalized who have been waiting for an uplift have been pushed down further. Given the state of an economy, coming to terms with the losses incurred due to the pandemic, all hopes of a fair representation & better opportunities in the near future, for the socially marginalized, ethnic and sexual minorities etc have all but gone out of the window. Years of efforts to emancipate and give the under-represented better opportunities in different walks of our social strata has definitely got a setback. They have been pushed back decades, thanks to the pandemic.
The pandemic is far from over and there may be more mutants which may emerge. Our only defense is to build a herd immunity against the virus and mass vaccinate people, so that hospitalizations and deaths are far and few in between. And if that means, for domestic or international travel or for availing a service or benefit , be it social security, school admission , a job or entry into a public place, or for a game, one needs to produce a vaccination certificate, on-the-spot on one’s phone, then so be it. All those who are resisting and fighting a vaccine mandate in the name of choice and freedom, need to realize one thing : Freedom is an opportunity given to a citizen to do what one wants to and exercise his or her free will, but it also comes with a responsibility. Undoubtedly freedom means choice and there can be no coercion. However, it must not be construed to be a free license to do anything or get away with something, which can put the larger society at risk. That is lawlessness. One’s freedom ends where another’s life begins ! So if anyone wishes to exercise freedom in a way that is not recommended and stay unvaccinated, then he or she must also be willing to forgo benefits and services, that must now be restricted only to those who are vaccinated and protected. We need to live with the virus now, without endangering lives. We cannot lower our guard yet and hence have no choice but continue to follow COVID appropriate behavior out of volition & mandate vaccinations. That means if there is a mandate, either you play along, or get going !

The new geopolitical normal of ‘not my business’ , convenient foes – the ‘Frenemies’ & the need for UN reform.
Blog 26
Six months & six days since I last wrote a blog and the world is a different place now. To put it subtly, ‘The Great White Bear of the North’ went on to be at loggerheads with it’s already separated ‘Daughter of the West’ . In plain speak, Russia committed the cardinal sin of invading Ukraine. Just when we thought the worst of the pandemic was behind us and the world economy was teetering and finding it’s feet is when this had to happen. Scores of lives across the world have been impacted adversely by the pandemic and several industries have posted losses, which they had hoped would be made good in 2022, just as the sun was setting on COVID -19. But Putin had other plans.
Full scale War returned to Europe a full 77 years after the World War II -the last major conflict which had dragged several nations into it and which ended with the defeat of the Axis powers and the annihilation of the Nazi forces in 1945. And comparisons with WW II was imminent this time, as this war was again brought in because of the despotic ambitions of an individual over national or international interests. And most of Europe along with the world watched in horror as the beautiful city of Kiev was bombed and more than a million Ukranians dislodged from their homes, with several others dead as it rang with the staccato of gun fires, the uncanny sound of tanks rolling in and wailing sirens. Much paeans have been sung by world leaders on the resilience shown by the Ukranian President and his coterie, in defending their motherland against the unilateral belligerent unprovoked aggression by Russia. Zelensky may even end up winning the Nobel Prize for Peace, for such is the way of our world. But the moot question that remains is – has the world done enough to stop Russia in it’s tracks and save Ukraine ? The plethora of sanctions aimed at crippling the Russian economy and containing it’s rich oligarchs’ prosperous living may have an effect to some extent, but may not be enough. Country after country is dispatching it’s emissary to Kiev to express ‘diplomatic solidarity’ with Ukraine and for the photo op with it’s swash buckling young President Zelensky, who has set a new trend in war time dress code. Millions of dollars coupled with latest ammunition is being offered to the Ukranians to defend themselves against the Russians, but is that enough ? The world is only helping Ukraine to battle a little longer & fight until death. None have come out in the open and joined hands with Ukraine to thwart the advance of the Russian forces. Nor has one seen any country’s emissary scooting to Moscow to prevail upon Putin to stop this madness. Why ? Is it the fear of being nuked, if one were to come in his way or the fear of unwittingly getting drawn into something that is ‘not my business’ the new geopolitical normal ? An energy dependent Europe refused to be drawn into the conflict out of fear of inviting the wrath of the Russians, with several other countries stopping short of expressing remorse at the death of civilians and hoping for the war to end soon. The situation in Ukraine is food for thought because of 2 emerging aspects of the modern world :
- There are no enemies anymore, but only ‘frenemies’ or friendly enemies. Countries now know that it is bad for business to make enemies out of each other and rather side step squabbles between nations , as bilateral issues that need to be settled between the warring duo. Why else during these times, would an entity like NATO that was formed with the intent of military defense and deterrent principally, choose to go on a membership overdrive instead and refrain from getting drawn into the Russia-Ukraine conflict ? Why would the unrelenting war in Afghanistan be abruptly stopped and the reign handed over to the Taliban , in spite of disquiet among the local populace, with the change in regime in the US ? Why would the world watch in silence as the military junta in Myanmar execute and jail pro-democracy activists, in absolute defiance ? Why would no one bat an eyelid as Uighur Muslims reportedly continue to be treated as second class citizens and face atrocities in China ? To sup with the devil and sleep with the angel at the same time , has become an acceptable practice in global politics.
- A skewed World Order not reflective of the demographics : The sustained war in Ukraine can be attributed to the absence of a strong world body that could have censured the aggressor and exercised it’s clout and pressurized it to stop this killing. If one were to trace the origins of the present United Nations Organization, one goes back to the League of Nations, that was steeped in post World War II psychosis, which believed that the future of the rest of the World was safe in the hands of the Permanent Five and bestowed them with ‘Veto powers’, unwittingly giving them unbridled powers to ‘do as they please’ and not factoring the aspect of them going wrong. And the fact that all of them have become nuclear powers in their own right, has only made things difficult, with no one daring to trifle with them. Let alone the world’s leading emerging economies like India, Indonesia, South Korea etc, large continents like Africa, South America & Australia-Oceania have gone unrepresented for decades. It is ironic that only 2 out of the Top 5 most populous countries in the world are part of the ‘Veto Power’ group, which represents only a mere 40 % of all humankind. How these Permanent Five can claim to represent the globe is debatable. For crimes committed that led to the World War II, Japan & Germany cannot continue to be ostracized and treated as pariahs in today’s time & age. For semblance of power and order in Asia, including Japan & India into the Permanent grouping, to stem the growing hegemony of China is critical. Similarly South Africa, Brazil & Australia are worthy contenders to represent that side of the world. It has now been proved by this war that France alone is in no position to stand against the might of Russia, without a deserving support from the European Union, of the likes of an economic power horse like Germany or Italy. And the island nation of UK is undeniably isolated enough to be ‘meddle -worthy ‘ in European affairs. Besides with Brexit, UK has made it clear where it’s priorities lie. The United Nations needs urgent reform and there cannot be a delay in it, else we are merely relegating it into a cosmetic organization that is redundant with the times and of no consequence. The war needs to end . The world deserves better and it is time to make the change with the UN permanent membership.
The Great Lankan Political Purge – ‘For the people, by the people’
Blog 27
While the rest of the world watched with a curious amalgamation of horror, amusement and glee, a horde of Sri lankan nationals descended into the power corridors of Colombo, storming into the Presidential Palace, straddling the grounds, making merry on the dining table, relaxing on the beds and even taking a dip in the pool to cool their flared tempers. They single handedly literally threw out the incumbent President Gotabaya, who presumably had fled by then, for his dear life along with his family. This entire event will go down in the annals of history of how the determined people of a nation ousted a corrupt regime, without blood shed. A new element of Abraham Lincoln’s prophetic definition of democracy as a rule ‘by the people and for the people’ came to pass in Sri Lanka. After years of civil war, Sri Lanka was just coming to terms with its new found awakening as one nation, with no internal conflict between the Tamils & the Sinhalese, when political instability started ruling the roost and family politics plagued the administration with flagrant nepotism. Where else in the world would one have heard of a situation where 2 brothers run a country as President and Prime Minister as if it were a personal fiefdom ?
As per the latest reports by Transparency International, Sri Lanka features in the bottom of the pyramid along with several of its other Asian counterparts. The full import of the levels of corruption in the country were felt by the gentry only when the misguided investment decisions by the ruling regime bankrupted the economy with citizens ultimately deprived of even the basic necessities of life like food items, essential drugs, cooking gas, petrol and diesel. Until then everything was business as usual. Prudent economic decisions and keeping politics out of the equation of public welfare is a lesson that South East Asian & several African nations need to learn still. The common man is sucked into political battles instead of being able to worry about his daily bread, water & a roof above his head. Political parties thrive on public misinformation and misappropriation of public funds is a common phenomenon across all levels of the political class. Politicians here are therefore looked down upon as being highly corrupt, insincere, unscrupulous, dishonest and sans any loyalty to any ideology or the country. Exception is unfortunately become a rarity in the matter. This is the key reason why South Asian countries, irrespective of geographical size & population, have not progressed at a desirable pace commensurate to the time they have remained independent from their erstwhile colonial masters. On the contrary, certain South East Asian countries like Singapore, Malaysia etc have been able to progress much faster, without losing optics of ensuring public welfare. Scandinavian countries also have a reputation of doing well in matters pertaining to public welfare and politics is not done with public money. Respect for the rule of law and for each other , coupled with very high levels of education, transparency, welfare economics and fiscal discipline have helped these countries climb the charts of Human Development Index and stay there consistently.
Now that the President and the Prime Minister have resigned, the new Sri Lankan government has an uphill task ahead of it, of climbing out of the debt trap that it has fallen into and more importantly ensuring that it doesn’t renege on any of it’s international financial obligations already taken. Sri Lanka must move towards the path of self sufficiency and stop treating itself second fiddle to other larger nations. Human Resources, Sea Food, Coffee, Tea and other cash crops which are found naturally in Sri Lanka can become a source of foreign exchange if tapped wisely , to revive the sick economy. Sri Lankan tourism could be a big revenue generator as well, if the government gets its act together. A case in point is be how Maldives became the World’s favorite tourist destination during the pandemic with its quarantine free access, while the rest of the world was locked down. The future of Sri Lanka is in the hands of the Lankans and not the Chinese and the government needs to realize this and bail the country and it’s citizens out of this mess. There are several other nations where a recession is forecast and some others where leaders hide behind politically motivated jingoistic speeches & rhetoric, pandering to their vote banks, indulging in blame game, shifting party loyalties for power, promising much & delivering very little. There is a very popular adage , ‘ You can fool some people some time and some people all the time, but not all the people all the time’. The Great Political purge that the world witnessed in Sri Lanka needs to be a wake up call for other leaders elsewhere because it is quite likely that the next time when people rise up elsewhere, they may not be too kind and neither might they be all lucky in fleeing their respective palaces on time.

75th Year of Indian Independence :
A momentous journey
Blog 28
On Aug 15th 2022, India will celebrate it’s 75th Independence Day. The entire nation will witness the marking of this historic day, when the incumbent Prime Minister unfurls the National Flag & leads the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort at Delhi. It has been a momentous journey over the years , for a nation that was born in the crucible of a long gone era & baptized in fire after decades of revolt of all types in all regions of the subcontinent, against it’s colonial masters, some muted while some flagrant and spreading like wildfire. The India of 1947 is not the India we see today. There have been many changes, some good, some bad, some ugly. But beauty, warts & all, this is a country that a billion people call home. As the nation celebrates this historic moment, there is no doubt about the fact that people across the length and breadth of this vast nation, across varied social strata will sit up, their hearts stirred by the flame of patriotism and that will burn with an inexplicable pride and sublime joy, no matter what their ideology be, no matter what their language, colour, caste or religion be. Several nations have come and gone, some have been split into two or many, a few others relegated to the pages of history, while many others have barely managed to ‘keep their heads above the water’ and stay afloat. The Union of India however, continues to shine and stand tall, in spite of it’s myriad differences in language, religion, culture, food habits, topography, local customs and attire. None, probably not even the colonial masters would have thought that the concept of India that they created by annexing one princely state after the other in the Indian subcontinent and bringing them all into the fold of the Crown of England, as one nation India, would last beyond a few years after 1947. We tend to not realize the enormity of task that befell the first Prime Minister and his cabinet, when they were handed over the reins of a ‘start up’ nation, that had to not only raise funds but also keep it’s ambitious erstwhile princely states at check and embrace the concept of ‘one nation’. It is quite unfortunate that many today speak abhorrently about the first Prime Minister of India and his team. The captain of the ship, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru and his crack team of ministers, the country’s first cabinet comprised of handpicked gems like Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Dr B. R. Ambedkar, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Dr Rajendra Prasad, Jagjivan Ram, SP Mukherjee, Dr John Mathai, RK Shanmugham Shetty, NV Gadgil, Rajumari Amrit Kaur, RA Kidwai, CH Bhabha & Sardar Baldev Singh. No Prime Minister in the history of India faced a challenge that the first PM of this nation and his cabinet faced – zero precedence and none to emulate. They had to learn what to do, how to do and deliver on the job, that none had done before them. If one were to look back, each of these stalwarts may have argued, agreed and at times agreed to disagree with each other and yet accomplished significant milestones before ‘hanging up their boots’ or ‘kicking the bucket’. They sowed the seeds for greater things to come in their respective ministries. Not much is spoken about this crack team that was tasked with laying the foundations of this nation. Either some are selectively picked & spoken about for convenience and rhetoric sake, while others easily forgotten and ignored. If one were to closely look at the names of India’s first cabinet – it represented stalwarts from across the political spectrum, language, race, colour & religion. It represented people with significant educational leaning, intellectual prowess and unflinching loyalty to the motherland. And they came, they saw & they conquered. It was like a cricket team that came in to the field, won the toss, led by it’s captain, who knew who needed to be brought in for which job and when and it had players who trusted their skipper and played as ‘one team’ to hit the ball out of the park. All that mattered to them was to win the match. India’s first Prime Minister & his cabinet represent the nation’s collective inheritance and is part of it’s legacy that unfortunately cannot be usurped by any single political party of today. Therefore it will be grave injustice if today’s generation choose to divide this team and ‘pick & choose’ a few as better than the rest , while shamelessly denigrate a few and totally ignore the contributions of a few others. The match was not won by an individual, it was won by the team !
On the 75th year of India’s Independence, it’s leaders of today have an uphill task. The challenge before today’s Prime Minister is not what the nation’s first Prime Minister faced. It is very different. India is a mature nation today that has seen tremendous progress across several sectors & thanks to it’s educated and young work force, it will continue to do so. But the nation needs to improve it’s Human Development Index now, if it has to break into the ranks of the ‘World’s most developed nations’. It needs to value it’s human capital and nurture it. Significant reforms are needed in the direction of improving the quality of life of it’s citizens. A Five point Charter could be launched & implemented this Independence Day:
- Reducing pollution levels : The nation needs to reduce it’s dependence on fossil fuels and ‘go green’ fully with mandatory electric vehicles for public transport. Tax breaks could be thought of as an option to encourage the public to switch to electric cars and other vehicles. Climate Change is a reality that will come and hit one, in the face, sooner than later and no better way to start by reducing fossil fuel burning.
- Higher Education Standards : 100 % literacy is not enough. The nation needs to focus on subsidized to free education till Class XII for all. Keeping political animosities aside, a leaf could be taken from the Delhi Govt’s successful up gradation of the quality of pedagogy in schools and it could be implemented across the nation.
- Universal Healthcare Access for all and subsidized treatment and quality infrastructure support with creation of more hospitals and clinics across the nation with sustained year-on-year focus on improving the quality of medical education. An implementation of a universal dial- in number like ‘911’ in the US , backed by a robust network of rescue and relief, powered by CISF, NDRF & medical and paramedical staff equipped with state-of-the-art rescue, mobility, transportation and life support paraphernalia, could be instituted.
- Civic Sanitation & Cleanliness : Instead of doling out mundane ‘Swachch Bharat’ awards and launching abhiyaans, impose strict fines on violation of civic order and cleanliness. Start by banning sticking of political posters, flags & hanging of banners in public places and roads. Allow rallies and campaigns only in designated places, which will need to be mandatorily cleared off by the organizers, of all trash after the meeting is over. Impose heavy fines for littering, spitting and dirtying roads, parks and public places.
- Greater impetus on research & academia : A nation cannot progress if it’s industry doesn’t derive the benefit of ‘lab-to-market’ technologies, that are home grown, sustainable and scalable, instead of depending always on foreign patented technology. More centres of excellence like the Indian Institute of Science, IIT’s, NIT’s, IIM’s etc need to be nurtured and created, with a clearly chalked out plan on research and development. The aim of such centres must not be to produce students who wish to work for others, but those who are willing to create work for others , with a technological and entrepreneurial mindset.
The potential of this nation is yet to be tapped fully and it needs to be made ‘future ready’. The demographics of this country is it’s biggest strength. People of different states, languages, colour, religion and race make up this interesting nation. It is like a garden with many flowers. Imagine if a garden were to have only flowers of one colour or kind, or a zoo only one animal of its kind, would we not find it drab and boring ? Variety is the spice of life and that is how nature also intends it to be. India’s true strength lies in it’s people and diversity and it is reflected aptly in how it’s people & the diaspora succeed remarkably in various walks of life , when they go and live outside it’s borders. Is it not therefore high time that we shift focus on it’s people and make this nation truly developed, in the real sense of the word ? This is the biggest challenge before everyone this 75th Independence Day & one that is specifically cut out for the leaders of today. Instead of wasting public taxpayer money on shenanigans, useless polarizing rhetoric, political bickering and constant machination to fuel and serve political ambitions, it is up to them to either stand up, take their jobs seriously and deliver or be forgotten, in the annals of history, as leaders of no consequence. The choice is very clear. The people of India everywhere & the World are watching.

The Changing Global political scene
& the silent re-emergence of Non-
Alignment and Neutrality
Blog 29
India celebrated it’s 75th Independence Day recently with a lot of fan fare. Celebrations, banners, posters and pictures of freedom fighters, rallies, patriotic songs and images of the nation’s founding fathers in print and electronic media ( albeit with the usual dose of it’s political spin) held sway across India over the last few days. One strikingly visible omission by certain sections of the media in India has been their shameful omission of the contributions of the nation’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Nehru was unarguably Mahatma Gandhi’s right hand man and one of the leading lights of India’s struggle for Independence. He spent 10 years in jails, standing shoulder to shoulder with other freedom fighters. It was Pandit Nehru who moved the resolution for Poorna Swaraj in 1929, arguing stoically against Gandhi ji’s measured demand for a Dominion status for India under Great Britain. Nehru’s contribution to the nation in the form of the IIT’s , IIM’s, BARC and several large institutions which he championed, are today the reason why India is a powerhouse of luminaries and continues to contribute world famous exports in the STEM fields. Simply because his descendants represent the opposition and are the bete noire of today’s ruling party is no reason to omit him from his rightful place in history, which he has earned by way of his contribution to this nation. When the Cold war was raising it’s ugly heads and threatened to swallow a young nation , which could easily have been tempted to take sides, by championing & espousing the concept of Non aligned movement, Pandit Nehru successfully steered the nation from getting sucked into geo-political rivalries between the US & the erstwhile USSR, instead keeping his and his team’s focus razor sharp on developing a fledgling nation and carving a place for itself in the comity of nations. What was a novel foreign policy idea and strategy mooted by him then, plausibly died a natural death with the dismantling of Communist USSR in the nineties. But that was not to be. It was USSR then and it is Communist China today. In his zeal to stay Non Aligned, as a Gandhian, perhaps his biggest mistake was his attempt to foster friendship with China and ceding the permanent membership seat to China, which proved to be a costly mistake, in hindsight, which surely might have been a regret that he took to his grave.
But then, has there ever been a leader who hasn’t erred in judgement or looked the other way, when a historic blunder happened ? Notwithstanding his daughter, Indira Gandhi’s contributions as India’s only woman Prime Minister, be it the wiping of separatist terrorist movements from Punjab , freeing Bangladesh from the clutches of Pakistan, making India a nuclear power, nationalizing banks or abolishing privy purses of erstwhile princes and rulers, her grandiose error was the imposition of emergency & muffling of fundamental rights during that period in India. Today in 2022, India has overtaken it’s former colonial master UK, as the world’s fifth largest economy and despite the slowdown that it has witnessed from 2016, the economy has largely remained on auto pilot mode, thanks to the path breaking economic reforms that were ushered in by then Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao, the ‘Father of Indian Economic Reforms’ and his able deputy, the then incumbent Finance Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. They liberalized the Indian economy and set the nation on a growth trajectory, that has never looked back. But can one forget the festering communal wound that was set open because Narasimha Rao blinked, resulting in the infamous demolition of a religious structure in Ayodhya ? His deputy Manmohan Singh continued ably after him in taking India to the next level of progress and development as Prime Minister, but equally deafening was his silence when his coalition partners indulged in shocking scam after scam during his tenure and not only brought his government disrepute but also eroded the base of his party for good. Take for instance, again, the tenure of former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. His idea of connecting the nation through the Golden Quadrilateral project was a big leap in bridging the nation with much needed road connectivity and powering the economy by adding spunk to logistics. He also picked up from where Indira had left by fueling India’s nuclear ambitions again with a second nuclear test at Pokhran. However, he too erred in judgement when he assumed that the camaraderie that he had built with the then Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif could translate to lasting peace in the subcontinent. While he undertook his famous Lahore bus journey, little did he know that the ISI in Pakistan, led by General Pervez Musharraf was hatching plans to backstab India. Consequently, the Kargil War ensued, which India ably fought and won, nonetheless. The moot point is that no leader has been perfect and all future leaders will also be far from perfect. To err is human and to stigmatize or ostracize someone for a blunder is unacceptable.
Today with the Ukraine -Russia war raging on, by not taking sides, India has again chosen to stay ‘non aligned’ and non-committal to any one ideology and instead opted to adopt the path of it’s founding Prime Minister. With the China- Taiwan – US crisis threatening further to snowball any time to another major global crisis, this policy of Non Alignment & Neutrality will assume further importance. No Prime Minister of a nation must be usurped by any political party. Once a Prime Minister, he/she belongs to the country and not to the party anymore. When the baton is passed on from one to another, they must carry it with pride, mutual respect and gratitude that destiny has chosen them to contribute and be part of the race in nation building. The step taken by the present Modi government in building a museum dedicated exclusively to India’s former Prime Ministers and showcasing their individual contributions is a right step in the direction. No nation can progress if it doesn’t know how to respect or treat it’s founding fathers and rulers. Besides, showing disrespect and ill-treating the legacy of it’s forefathers has never been India’s culture and must never be. Therefore it is important that India’s media gets it’s act together, keeps its focus on what it generally does fairly well – unbiased, truthful reporting of news not opinion, sans emotion, masala, theatrics or drama and nips it in the bud – this disturbing trend of attempts of character assassination of it’s former leaders and freedom fighters and polarizing society by bucketing them in camps created on ideological lines. India needs to move to the next league and it’s high time that it becomes a truly developed nation. For that to happen, there is neither time nor energy to be wasted on petty squabbles and meaningless jingoistic debates.

Game, ‘Sun‘ Set, Match :
Serena Williams – End of an Era
Blog 30
Serena Williams recent retirement announcement was a watershed moment in world sports. She is undoubtedly one of the greatest athletes of all times and transformed the game of tennis, like no other. Making her professional debut in 1995, Serena hasn’t looked back since. Her climb has been meteoric. She has to her credit 23 Grand Slam wins, the most by any player in the Open era. She has been a formidable player who has changed the way the game is perceived world wide, especially among women and young girls. Her initial years of pairing with her sister, Venus and dominating the Women’s circuit was unforgettable period for very tennis lover. The Williams’ sisters completely transformed the game, bringing in with them brazen display of grit, aggression, tenacity and one upmanship which was a rarity in a game that perceptibly had built a reputation over years of a game that had players exercising restraint, controlled composure & measured aggression. In contrast, the Williams sisters and Serena in particular brought in chutzpah and a new element of glamour to the game, with a no holds barred approach.
Human-ness & it’s timeless
intractable traits
Blog 31
It has been an incredible 1 year plus since I wrote anything. And when I look back I realize that I had been consumed by other things which seemed priority then but in retrospect thinking didn’t deserve the time & attention that I unfortunately awarded it. It has been a roller coaster ride over the last 1 year and has the world changed much in this ‘missing writing year’ of mine ? I think, not much. I may not be a student or expert in human behaviour but I think that while fundamental traits that separate us from other species have evolved and characterize us as human, we keep going back & digging inside to bring out those feral traits that we thought we had abandoned long back, but in reality are a part of our DNA. If we analyze human behavior over centuries, we will realize that those dark instincts that propel us to act inimical to the very foundations of a civilized society, keep surfacing every now and then. We are still the same self-obsessed, territorial, protective self-effacing species on the planet, no different from our forefathers who lived eons before us. Here is why I say it :
1. Unsatiable human craving for Wars :
If one thought that the present generation is far more evolved and arrived ‘in the head’ to understand the futility of wars & the reprehensible trail of destruction that it leaves behind, then one is mistaken. We may be developed technologically & have a better understanding of the world around us than our previous lot, but we are still the same animal from inside. That is why at the drop of a hat , at every remotely justifiable opportunity, even today people unwaveringly pick up the gun and go after their kind. What else can explain the ongoing war in West Asia between Israel & the Hamas ? Under the premise of decimating the Hamas, the Israeli army has actually crossed all rationale & it’s ‘no holds barred’ actions now defy human logic. No sane mind can justify the unprovoked bombing and mass killing of innocent men, women & children in particular, who are merely occupants and citizens of a territory, from where the Israeli enemy , Hamas also purportedly operate out of. In reality, had the Islamic world & the Western powers taken sides here, this war had the character of naturally progressing into a Third World War, in no time. Today in 2024, the world is beseiged with wars not only in Asia but also in Europe , where the Russia-Ukraine war seems to be nearing no end. While the Ukraine war may have been started by a Russian tyrant, much loathed by the West, the moot question that the world must now answer is, if there is a despot on either side, who are unrelenting in their efforts to out-last the other and win at all costs, the people be damned !
2. Despotic Aspirations of a few :
Hitler, Alexander, Chenghiz Khan & Babur deserve no more reproach than a Putin, Kim Jong or the military rulers in half a dozen countries worldwide today, who cling to power with all their might until the last fibre of their political and miltary might gives away. They command adulation from their followers by building & fostering a self-image of indestructibility, an unquenchable thirst for territorial expansion, unpliable nationalism and obsessive hero worship. Their aspirations know no bounds. In the earlier centuries, rulers would have been held guilty of bloodshed & war and also of cleverly furthering their territorial aspirations and power by building marital ties, and using it as a leverage. Today’s world is no different where strategic leveraging is being deployed by some , who not only assimilate powerful weapons & pose belligerently, advocating minimum nuclear deterrence with military power but also take full advantage of their financial prowess and economic clout. A case in point would be how the Chinese have created spheres of influence across the Indian Ocean and South China Sea by supplying military equipment, funding large infrastructure projects in poorer countries and eventually winning them over and creating ‘pseudo-vassal’ states, who would stand with them, come rain or sun.
3. Simmering tensions between global powers & powers ‘to-be’ :
Since time immemorial, global powers have been at loggerheads to assume supremacy in a game of one-upmanship. History was witness to how the Ottoman Empire fended off the Romans and how the Romans kept several others at bay. The East India Company & the Japanese Army had unmistakable rivalry having drawn their swords and leaving no opportunity waste to plunge their bayonets at each other, which eventually culminated in the Second World War, with the two warring entities ending up on opposing sides. In the closer years, the drudgery of the Cold War and a fulminant race to dominate the World left both the US & the erstwhile USSR, high and dry. The tensions between these warring powers undoubtedly altered the course of things and shaped global geopolitics for years to come. We see Chinese hegemony everywhere now, so much so, that it has started to threaten the only other remaining super power – United States of America & the soon ‘power to-be’ : India. The Chinese position on the territory of Aksai Chin ( rightful part of the erstwhile Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir ) and it’s absurd claim on the entire territory of the Indian North Eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh is well known. The Chinese continue to display these regions on their maps as part of their geography. Further, their new found interests in Southern Indian Ocean in traditional Indian outposts and India’s closest neighbours like Maldives and Sri Lanka have only added fuel to fire by irking India. The US are not too far behind. The Chinese stance on the territorial sovereignty of the island state of Taiwan, which they consider as an inalienable part of their landmass is not going down well with them and rightfully so because the US cannot afford the Chinese to extend it’s influence well beyond the South China Sea into the Atlantic.
4. Unending Search for Improved Ease of Living :
The picture is all not gloomy also. We also have retained our ingrained traits of striving to become better. Right from the time our forefathers were cavemen and every day was a survival against the odds of inclement weather, predatory animals and ill health, humankind has always been challenging itself to make lives better and easier. Rightfully so, necessity was the mother of invention and discovery. All key inventions and discoveries starting from the ability to walk on our twos to the use of the human opposable thumb, discovery of fire, the wheel and the industrial revolution were significant milestones that propelled us out of the jungle into a super dominant , evolved species, firmly assigning to posterity, the fate of other animals, plants & consequentially the planet, in our hands. Today the single biggest invention cum discovery after the Internet is the evolution of Artificial Intelligence. While there may be pros & cons to it, AI has the capability to propel humankind to another level. The real development and progress that happened in the Western world took half a century, if not more. AI has the potential to transform greater number of developing and under developed countries faster into a better state and help them leapfrog into developed economies within a decade, if this knowledge based technology is swiftly adopted by nations, tapped smartly and with intelligence ( pun intended !). Any new technology or invention is looked down upon by naysayers & it’s negative aspects always blown out of proportion. Remember the noise and what they said when computers came or when man learnt to fly when the Wright brothers discovered the aeroplane ( did they or was it someone else before them who discovered it first actually ? ). Thanks to computers, the telephone, the discovery of penicillin and the discovery of human flight , eventual discoveries and consequential commercial implications around it, the world actually became a better place. Today again with AI, the world stands at the brink of another revolution. Imagine a world where at the click of a button or with voice command, your tasks are done or can be fully completed or nearly accomplished with precision, without undue stress, fewer dependencies on others and on time. The quality of work, life & human health will dramatically improve, resulting in people having more time at their disposal to not only achieve more in less time but also be able to consign more time for social and human interactions.
Our fundamental human traits are what make us human – some evil , some good and they never change. As a proverbial saying goes , ‘ all human beings have two types of dogs within them- a good one & a bad one. Ultimately we become more of the one, who we feed the most! ‘ It is important therefore for us as a species to focus and hone the traits, which will make our lives better.

The Party begins :
Rise of the Labour party Rule in UK
Blog 32
The UK finally has a new Prime Minister after a tumultuous decade and a half-reign of the Tories. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has come to power with an overwhelming majority and practically has been handed a mandate to literally overhaul the systems that plague today’s UK.
One of the biggest systems that is crying for attention is the NHS – one of the world’s largest publicly funded health service, that UK is known for. Irrefutably, the NHS is today in the ‘Intensive Care Unit’ and just about making it daily. Successive UK governments have only awarded lip service and tokenism statements on the present woes of the NHS, reducing it to mere photo-ops by the incumbent Prime Minister beside hospital beds and geriatric homes. The new Prime Minister of the country has a golden chance to transform this behemoth public service institution , in keeping with the times :
1. Rising Geriatric Population & a short staffed NHS:
The UK is today home to the one of the world’s fastest ageing population. As per the Office of Statistics, Census 2021 data, results show the population of England and Wales has continued to age since 2011. The number of people aged 65 years and over increased from 9.2 million in 2011 to over 11 million in 2021 and the proportion of people aged 65 years and over rose from 16.4% to 18.6%. This is a fairly large number. Unfortunately the NHS today is short staffed and over-stretched to handle this burgeoning number. It is critical that an ageing population is taken care of well, so that they can extend their productive years for the country. It is an irrefutable fact that the ageing population will result in labour shortage in the economy across different sectors. And this applies to NHS workers too ! This is a radical reality and faced with this radical truth UK needs to take radical measures.
2. Planned Immigration for the NHS :
Several countries across the world have taken calculated steps to ensure that the wheels of their economy are well oiled by bringing in educated and qualified immigrants in a structured manner. Unfortunately the UK has been toying with immigration in an ill conceived fashion. The outgoing Prime Minister Sunak’s immigration policies were well intended, albeit more focused at ‘keeping the boats at bay’ than addressing Britain’s true problem of incoming labour shortage in the fast approaching years. The number of qualified foreign educated doctors and nurses making UK their home is not commensurate to the requirement on the ground. And there are several issues that are responsible for this.
- Professional Apartheid: A convoluted Re-licensing ( yes, not LICENSING, BUT RE-LICENSING !) System :
UK requires that all foreign educated doctors and nurses re-license themselves in the UK by clearing licensing exams. These exams are not only intensive and time consuming but also result in bringing in very few foreign experienced doctors and nursing staff , who have to literally start at the bottom of their career pyramids once they have landed in UK, resulting in disgruntlement and poor job satisfaction. Imagine for a minute that a UK national residing in India were to fall sick, would he/she wait to return to the UK to get treated or will he/she instead reach out to a local clinic/hospital of repute and get treated by an Indian doctor of their choice ? The answer is obvious – no one will wait until they get worse or end up being critically ill and rather choose to address their health concerns instantly at the hands of a local doctor of repute. So if those Indian doctors and nurses are good enough to treat UK nationals on Indian soil, while they are living here as expatriates, why do the very same doctors and nurses need to prove their worth and technical prowess all over again, if they were to move to UK ? This is professional apartheid, which needs to be nipped in the bud, irrespective of whichever part of the world the practitioner comes from. While the intent of licensing may be good, it has sadly today become a tool to thwart well qualified and trained health professionals from being their best professional selves in the land they immigrate to. The UK government could instead take the following steps :
(a ) Start by recognizing medical degrees from Commonwealth countries like India, Singapore, South Africa etc. This will bring in more talent pool to the UK faster.
(b) The notion that removing re-licensing requirement for International Medical Graduates will pave the way for mindless immigration from developing and third world countries of Asia and Africa is ill-founded. The government can always put in place several layers of filters to ensure that only the truly worthy and talented come through. E.g it can restrict PLAB and GMC licensing for only those doctors with less than 10 years of clinical work experience in their home country and allow those with more than 10 years of clinical work experience to obtain a GMC license by default after 1 year of practise under supervision in the UK and enter full fledged individual practice. Ditto for nurses. Others not meeting this criteria could mandatorily be made to follow the current licensing rules.
(c ) Continue to ensure 100 % adherence to the English language testing system for all, so that only those who meet these standards are filtered through and integrate seamlessly with the English way of life.
The above three measures will ensure that quality talent comes in faster and also gets assimilated into a beleaguered and ailing UK health care system, without foreign educated medical and nursing personnel wasting precious their work years in arduous re-licensing journeys and frustratingly climbing up the rungs of professional ladder in UK. These professionals will then start contributing to the British economy faster as soon as they land. The Prime Minister doesn’t need to look farther than his own household ( the Honorable Mrs. Victoria Starmer ) to be thoroughly educated on the ills that plague the NHS and how to come up with radical measures to fix them.
3. Revamped Government Aid for NHS & Adequate Compensation:
NHS must be sanctioned more funds over the next few years to expand capacity and build scale. The moot question that the new British Prime Minister needs to answer is that , if what was conceived and built in the 1940’s has enough strength and wherewithal to weather the storm of a burgeoning ageing population. Is it armed well enough with funds and does it need to be sanctioned more and administered differently and better ?
An already short-staffed NHS is stretched beyond its capacity and paid poorly, not proportional to the work hours they put in. Consequently, union strikes and boycotts continue to rule the roost at hospitals and institutions manned by NHS personnel. The Prime Minister needs to address this and correct this disparity, so that NHS workers feel more empowered financially to carry on with their duties and contribute selflessly to public welfare.
A healthy nation is a productive nation . And a productive nation augurs well for the UK economy. The Prime Minister would have been leaps and miles ahead of all his predecessors and laid the foundations of solid change by addressing these issues with the NHS in his first 100 days in power. Let’s hope the United Kingdom truly transforms under the leadership of Prime Minister Keir Starmer .
